The White Alder, Cuyahoga, and Blackthorn were Coast Guard cutters that were sunk in collisions with other vessels. The White Alder was lost in 1968, the Cuyahoga in 1978, and the Blackthorn in 1980. This book details the cutters and events which led up to, and after, their tragic collisions which sank them and claimed the lives of many of their crewmembers.
After retiring with over 25 years of active military service Ed Semler was routinely sought out for "words of wisdom" from prospective Chiefs participating in the Chiefs Initiation. Feeling that providing the new Chief with just a few lines on a Charge Sheet was doing them an injustice, he decided to put together his advice on becoming a well-rounded Chief Petty Officer. This book details his thoughts and experiences, both good and bad, that helped him through his career.
The Three Gunsallus Brothers; Fighting for Pennsylvania During The Civil War is a true story based on the lives of John, Samuel, and Taylor Gunsallus. These were ordinary men of their time from Snow Shoe, Pennsylvania who answered the heroic call to fight for their country. What makes their story even more interesting is the fact that they fought for four different regiments representing the great state of Pennsylvania; the 13th Cavalry and 10th, 51st, and 148th Infantry regiments. Their regimental diversity gives the reader a broad aspect of the events going on simultaneously during the war. Follow their lives through the Civil War as the brother's engage in some of deadliest battles ever fought on American soil; such as Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg.
This is the compelling story of three brothers who fought on opposing sides during the American Civil War. Born and raised in Tennessee, which was a slave state, it illustrates how the American Civil War not only divided a country, but also families. The Walker Brothers; Samuel, Lewis, and Napoleon, were normal men of their time, trying to make a living for themselves and caring for their families. But as battles over politics, sovereignty, and slavery divided the nation they felt they had to choose a side. But which side would each brother choose?Written by Edward Leo Semler Jr., he is the author of several other books including "The Three Gunsallus Brothers - Fighting For Pennsylvania During The Civil War."
Edward Semler documents United States Coast Guard Cutter Sherman's (WHEC-720) deployment in 2001 to the Persian Gulf in support of United Nations sanctions against the country of Iraq and subsequent historic circumnavigation of the globe. It covers in detail Sherman's pre-deployment workups, transit to the Persian Gulf, Persian Gulf operations, and return transit. Through the use of Sherman's actual ships logs, Navy command history reports, other documents, photographs, and personal accounts, the author compiles a comprehensive narrative of Sherman's deployment covering major events such as law enforcement operations in the Persian Gulf, the sinking of the M/V Zainab, and the rescue of the M/V Modern Drive. This event is historic within the Coast Guard community because Sherman is only the third Coast Guard cutter to circumnavigate the globe in modern times and the first since 1969. And out of the three vessels to accomplish this amazing journey she is the only one that was not an icebreaker. This updated version now includes Sherman's logs. Note: The Kindle eBook edition has color photographs and the print paperback has black & white photographs.
This is a story about the founding of the United States of America. It's a factual story piecing together documents that I have researched on Captain Thomas Askey and Lieutenant Richard Gunsalus, which are over 250 years old at the time I wrote this book. I link their information along with events of the time to document the founding of one of the greatest and most powerful countries in the modern world. These events unfold in the early 1760's towards the end of the French and Indian War. At this point there was no United States of America. It was a grouping of 13 individual Colonies governed by the British, and therefore subjects of the British Crown and King George III. But these Colonies were beginning to join together and growing more independent of their British authority. This growing need for independence fueled the desire to become their own country and birth of what Americans enjoy today.
