Ten-year-old Margot, daughter of Nazi Germany's newly appointed ambassador to Argentina, feels lost in a country where everything is different. She begins to adjust, but fate deals her blow after blow. Her alcoholic mother contracts tuberculosis, her father's health mysteriously declines, and as dangers escalate for her, she is forced to run, hoping to find a safe haven.
She wants her independence, her own space. After graduating high school she packs up, leaves Berlin, and settles in a small town near the Harz Mountains. Twenty-two years later, still single, she's the owner of a gift shop. When the relationship with the man she's dating begins to cool and he threatens her, involving the Stasi, she decides to return to Berlin. Then the Wall goes up. She thinks herself trapped, but is she?
