Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Psychology - Forensic Psychology and Penal System, grade: A, The University of Liverpool, language: English, abstract: Insanity defense deals with a division of the assumption of insanity which describes the degree at which people accused of committing a crime might be excused of the responsibility of the crime because of their mental illness. The conditions of this kind of defense are based on the instructions which are presented to the jury by the trial judge at the closing of the case. The instruction on mental conditions can be based on any of the many rules which are used to determine mental illness. The last decision on mental illness depends fully on the jury which uses the information given from the testimony of a professional¿ witness, normally expert in the psychology filed (Williams, 2006). The final result of such decision puts the person where he should be accordingly, can be in the mental institution, in jail, or direct release. Owing to these above mentioned aspects there are various problems which have been raised by the presence of insanity defense. In general I believe that people suffering from Schizophrenics should not be allowed to plead innocent on the basis of their condition, owing to the above factors and other which I am going to outline in details
Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Sociology - Medicine and Health, grade: A, The University of Liverpool, language: English, abstract: The question of whether to legalize marijuana or not in America has continued to draw mixed reactions from various people, while some agree, other disagree. Though Congress passed a law in 1937 to outlaw smoking and possession of marijuana in America, millions of America still smokes marijuana. There are a number of reasons that marijuana smokers¿ site as to why they continue to smoke marijuana. Yet, the government when outlawing marijuana also gave its own reasons, but it seems to have failed. As observed by Gettman despite of a lot of efforts to eradicate domestic marijuana, ¿production of marijuana has been on a steady increase over time. Since outlawing marijuana has not achieved its desired objectives, time has come to change this law. This research paper thus seeks to review this issue by proposing that marijuana should be legalized.
Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Sociology - Individual, Groups, Society, grade: A, The University of Liverpool, language: English, abstract: Trait theory was developed from the concept of trait which simply describes the characteristic behavior of individuals thus their personality. Trait encompasses all aspects of how individuals perceive, believe and feel about things. This is what distinguishes individuals from one another. Trait theories are therefore concerned with understanding the differences in peoples' personality and with establishing the causes of these perceived differences. Although different theories have been developed by different people, they are all based on the following assumptions: people genetically inherit traits from their biological parents; some traits are predominantly suited for leadership; and people who make good leaders have the correct if not sufficient combination of traits (Digman, 1990). It is through these assumptions that this theory has formed a good basis for selection of leaders thus a very important discipline in management. This essay therefore seeks to discuss ¿five factor¿ trait theory highlighting some of the advantages and disadvantages of using such a theory to select leaders in the workforce. Unlike the traditional psychological researches, contemporary psychological researchers in personality have managed to come up with a more comprehensive and empirical model for analyzing personality traits known as ¿the five factor¿ or the ¿big five¿ theory (Digman, 1990). The ¿five factor¿ theory is a five factor model with broad categories of personality traits, each category having its distinct behavioral characteristics associated with them. Though the theory is new, the five factor model has proved to be one of the most practical and applicable model in studying human personality and has thus been accorded critical attention (Digman 1990)
