Encore un livre qui était nécessaire, qu'il fallait écrire pour faire connaître exactement un homme d'une certaine importance, appartenant au moins à la petite histoire et qui nous était parvenu tout enveloppé de légendes épaisses. M. Gérard-Gailly s'est chargé de ce soin et s'est acquitté de cette tâche d'une manière solide et d'une manière charmante. Il nous a mis dans l'intimité de Bussy-Rabutin de telle sorte que toutes légendes ont disparu et que la vérité, maintenant, sur ce personnage et sur ses entours est absolument établie. Et avec cela on ne peut pas avoir plus d'esprit que M. Gérard-Gailly, plus de bonne grâce alerte, plus d'humour, plus de verve dans les discussions et plaidoyers, ni meilleur style. Son livre est agréable autant qu'il est essentiel...

Il n'est pas de sentiment que les philosophes aient plus blâmé, condamné et raillé que l'égoïsme, l'amour propre comme dit La Rochefoucauld, l'amour de soi. Aristote y ramène toutes les passions et il faut entendre les passions mauvaises; tout le Christianisme, par une interprétation peut-être fausse d'une parole de son fondateur, lui livre une bataille éternelle; Montaigne lui-même, cette fleur charmante d'égoïsme aimable, biaise avec son égoïsme et le présente comme un projet d'étudier l'homme en la personne de M. de Montaigne. Pascal dit de Montaigne: le sot projet qu'il a de se peindre et prononce l'arrêt, dont l'égoïsme ne s'est pas relevé Le moi est haïssable. Renchérissant sur Aristote, La Rochefoucauld montre avec acharnement que l'amour propre est la source, non seulement de nos passions mauvaises, mais de ce que nous prenons pour nos vertus, et, plus dangereux déguisé qu'à visage découvert, se fait aimer, comme s'il en avait besoin, sous le masque des qualités qui sont le plus éloignées de ce qu'il est.

Elle les consacre d'abord comme étant de ceux qui doivent entrer dans l'entretien et comme dans l'aliment de l'humanité, et c'est la plus illustre et la plus chère récompense qui puisse stimuler l'ambition d'un homme et la satisfaire. - Un temps vient ensuite où la scolarité enterre un auteur. Jean-Baptiste-Henri du Trousset de Valincour naquit à Paris, le premier de mars 1653. Il était d'une famille moyennement noble du Cambrésis. Orphelin de père quelques années après sa naissance et élevé par sa mère, il fit, paraît-il, des études assez incomplètes. Vers la vingtième année, il se sentit attiré du côté des belles-lettres. Il fit connaissance avec le Père Bouhours et s'enquit avec curiosité des nouveautés. En 1678, à l'âge de vingt-cinq ans, il lut la Princesse de Clèves, qui fut un grand événement littéraire. Sans savoir, peut-être, si elle était de Mme de La Fayette ou de Segrais, il en discuta avec ses amis, il en causa sans doute avec le Père Bouhours, et il écrivit assez vite un petit volume de critique générale et de critiques de détail sur cet ouvrage. Le sien fit du bruit. On en devisa avec vivacité dans la société littéraire et dans la société aristocratique du temps; le jeune M. de Valincour eut cet honneur qu'on attribua sa critique à Bouhours lui-même; il était lancé dans la vie littéraire et dans la gloire...
