Elle les consacre d'abord comme étant de ceux qui doivent entrer dans l'entretien et comme dans l'aliment de l'humanité, et c'est la plus illustre et la plus chère récompense qui puisse stimuler l'ambition d'un homme et la satisfaire. - Un temps vient ensuite où la scolarité enterre un auteur. Comme il n'est plus qu'à moitié dans les préoccupations intellectuelles du public, chacun n'y prend garde qu'au cours de ses études, et, quittés les bancs, on ne le lit plus parce qu'on croit l'avoir lu et qu'on se tient quitte envers lui. Quand ce moment arrive pour un écrivain, il vaudrait mieux pour lui que les professeurs le laissassent de côté, moyennant quoi, après avoir quitté le collège, le curieux irait à lui comme à quelque chose d'inconnu, de non touché et d'imprévu. - Platon n'est plus lu qu'en classe, très partiellement, très superficiellement, par acquit de conscience, c'est-à-dire peu consciencieusement et avec le commencement du ferme propos de n'y plus revenir.

A quoi on le voit ? A ses discussions et à ses polémiques, courtes et vives; et il est même insupportable de le contempler combattant par allusions contre un adversaire qu'il ne nomme jamais, puis contre un autre qu'il laisse anonyme, puis contre un autre qu'il revêt du mystère de l'incognito. Il faut que nous les devinions. Grand Dieu, rends-leur le jour en combattant contre eux ! Toujours est-il qu'il les connaît admirablement...

Jean-Baptiste-Henri du Trousset de Valincour naquit à Paris, le premier de mars 1653. Il était d'une famille moyennement noble du Cambrésis. Orphelin de père quelques années après sa naissance et élevé par sa mère, il fit, paraît-il, des études assez incomplètes. Vers la vingtième année, il se sentit attiré du côté des belles-lettres. Il fit connaissance avec le Père Bouhours et s'enquit avec curiosité des nouveautés. En 1678, à l'âge de vingt-cinq ans, il lut la Princesse de Clèves, qui fut un grand événement littéraire. Sans savoir, peut-être, si elle était de Mme de La Fayette ou de Segrais, il en discuta avec ses amis, il en causa sans doute avec le Père Bouhours, et il écrivit assez vite un petit volume de critique générale et de critiques de détail sur cet ouvrage. Le sien fit du bruit. On en devisa avec vivacité dans la société littéraire et dans la société aristocratique du temps; le jeune M. de Valincour eut cet honneur qu'on attribua sa critique à Bouhours lui-même; il était lancé dans la vie littéraire et dans la gloire...
