Tantôt il accuse les Dieux ou les fait accuser par ses personnages, puisque les Dieux sont immoraux. Tantôt il les transforme et il en fait des Dieux vertueux et ils sont reconnaissables s'ils peuvent et il n'en a pas grand souci. Tantôt il les altère dans deux sens différents...

Though it may not have been possible in the following pages to reproduce the elegant and incisive style of a master of French prose, not even the inadequacies of a translation can obscure the force of his argument. The only introduction, therefore, that seems possible must take the form of a request to the reader to study M. Faguet's criticism of modern democracy with the daily paper in his hand. He will then see, taking chapter by chapter, how in some aspects the phenomena of English democracy are identical with those described in the text, and how in others our English worship of incompetence, moral and technical, differs considerably from that which prevails in France. It might have been possible, as a part of the scheme of this volume, to note on each page, by way of illustration, instances from contemporary English practice, but an adequate execution of this plan would have overloaded the text, or even required an additional volume. Such a volume, impartially worked out with instances drawn from the programme of all political parties, would be an interesting commentary on current political controversy, and it is to be hoped that M. Faguet's suggestive pages will inspire some competent hand to undertake the task.

Zeno was the pupil of Crates. In extreme youth he opened a school at Athens in the Poecile. The Poecile was a portico; portico in Greek is stoa, hence the name of Stoic. Zeno taught for about thirty years; then, on the approach of age, he died by his own hand. Zeno thought, as did Epicurus and Socrates, that philosophy should only be the science of life and that the science of life lay in wisdom.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Car on ne le lit plus du tout et il est de ceux que l'on ne connaît que par ce que les professeurs de philosophie en disent dans leurs cours ou en écrivent dans leurs manuels. Il n'est plus que scolaire.La scolarité est d'abord le triomphe, puis le tombeau des auteurs. Elle les consacre d'abord comme étant de ceux qui doivent entrer dans l'entretien et comme dans l'aliment de l'humanité, et c'est la plus illustre et la plus chère récompense qui puisse stimuler l'ambition d'un homme et la satisfaire. Un temps vient ensuite où la scolarité enterre un auteur. Comme il n'est plus qu'à moitié dans les préoccupations intellectuelles du public, chacun n'y prend garde qu'au cours de ses études, et, quittés les bancs, on ne le lit plus parce qu'on croit l'avoir lu et qu'on se tient quitte envers lui. Quand ce moment arrive pour un écrivain, il vaudrait mieux pour lui que les professeurs le laissassent de côté, moyennant quoi, après avoir quitté le collège, le curieux irait à lui comme à quelque chose d'inconnu, de non touché et d'imprévu.
