Die Martyrer ist ein dramatisches Gedicht, das 1853 von Erik Johan Stagnelius ver������ffentlicht wurde. Das Werk beschreibt das Leben von M�����rtyrern, die f�����r ihren Glauben an Gott und ihre �����berzeugungen sterben. Die Handlung spielt in der Zeit des r������mischen Reiches und folgt dem Leben von drei Christen, die sich weigern, den r������mischen G������ttern zu opfern und stattdessen an ihren Glauben festhalten. Die Hauptfiguren sind ein junger Mann namens Fabius, seine Schwester Lucilla und ihr Verlobter Caius. Das Gedicht beschreibt ihre Tapferkeit und ihren Glauben an Gott, w�����hrend sie von den r������mischen Beh������rden verfolgt werden. Die Geschichte endet tragisch, als die drei M�����rtyrer hingerichtet werden. Udvalgte digte af Erik Johan Stagnelius--Erik Johan Stagnelius, 1793-1823, svensk forfatter. Stagnelius voksede op på Öland og i Kalmar og levede en outsidereksistens i et yderst beskedent embede. Hans slebne, subjektivt mytologiske lyrik stod frit over for samtidens romantiske skoler i ind- og udland, men var influeret af Swedenborg, gnosticisme, kabbala og astrologi. Hans mysticisme isolerede ham fra realiteternes verden, livsomstændigheder og værkkronologi er således usikre. Digtsamlingen Liljor i Saron (1821) og sørgespillet Bacchanterna (1822) udkom før hans tidlige død i Stockholm. Den religiøst erotiske intensitet er en grundtone i digte, der udtrykker snart en tragisk splittelse, snart en sublim enhedsoplevelse. Det avanceret bizarre "Till Förruttnelsen" går i sin billedkombination af død og eros videre end hos den beslægtede Schack von Staffeldt og snarere i retning af Baudelaire. En sådan påkaldelse af abstrakte begreber går igen i hans navngivning af længselsdriften som "Amanda" eller "Anima", sublimeret og omskabt til poesi.
