Ernst Brandes klassiske bog "Samfundsspørgsmål" fra 1885 er delt op i to afsnit. Det første fortæller om den kontroversielle engelske demograf Thomas Malthus’ befolkningslære fra slutningen af 1700-tallet set i et for 1880’erne typisk lys. Anden del beskæftiger sig med mere fundamentale sociale og økonomiske spørgsmål, der på interessant og let tilgængelig vis indfører læseren i 1880’ernes syn på økonomi og samfund.Ernst Immanuel Cohen Brandes (1844-1892) var en dansk nationaløkonomisk forfatter, journalist og redaktør for "Københavns Børstidende". Han arbejdede både som økonom og børsmægler, men beskæftigede sig mest med journalistisk virksomhed, hvor han blandt andet skrev for "Tilskueren" og "Politiken", som var medgrundlagt af hans bror Edvard Brandes, og for hvilken hans bror Georg Brandes også skrev. Ernst Brandes’ bog "Samfundsspørgsmål" fra 1885 blev hans længste værk, og den beskæftiger sig ligesom hans journalistik med økonomiske og sociale forhold.
