Como es sabido, Esteban Echeverría dejó entre sus papeles inéditos en prosa una obra titulada Cartas a un amigo. Son un intento de novela epistolar y confidencia disfrazada de realidad autobiográfica. Las Cartas a un amigo -treinta y tres en total- pudieron haber sido escritas hacia 1830-1832.Las Cartas a un amigo de Esteban Echeverría recogen episodios de la vida del autor, como la pérdida de su madre, reflexiones que, a la postre, son el germen de muchas de sus ideas o, incluso aspectos tan íntimos como la fascinación ante una mujer virtuosa. Echeverría relata estos sucesos en unas epístolas que prefiguran el estilo exaltado de su obra La Cautiva.

Dogma socialista y otras páginas políticas es uno de los primeros manifiestos del socialismo en América. Se trata de un socialismo peculiar, que marca distancia con las fuerzas políticas tradicionales de la Argentina del siglo XIX y que tiene un talante literario. Para Esteban Echeverría la literatura daría un nuevo perfil a un continente en ascenso, aunque parecía tratarse de una pretensión futura. Así lo dice en su Dogma: A fines de mayo del año de 1837 se propuso el que subscribe promover el establecimiento de una Asociación de jóvenes, que quisieran consagrarse a trabajar por la patria.La sociedad argentina entonces estaba dividida en dos facciones irreconciliables por sus odios como por sus tendencias, que se habían largo tiempo despedazado en los campos de batalla: la facción federal vencedora, que se apoyaba en las masas populares y era la expresión genuina de sus instintos semibárbaros y la facción unitaria, minoría vencida, con buenas tendencias, pero sin bases locales de criterio socialista, y algo antipática por sus arranques soberbios de exclusivismo y supremacía.Había, entretanto, crecido, sin mezclarse en esas guerras fratricidas, ni participar de esos odios, en el seno de esa sociedad una generación nueva, que por su edad, su educación, su posición debía aspirar y aspiraba a ocuparse de la cosa pública.Incluimos en este volumen breve además los siguientes ensayo de Esteban Echeverría: Ojeada retrospectivaDogma socialista de la Asociación de MayoCartas a don Pedro de Ángelis editor del Archivo Americano.

Echeverría integraba el bando unitario en la guerra civil que sacudía a la incipiente República Argentina. Era un acérrimo opositor a Juan Manuel de Rosas y murió tras diez años de exilio en Uruguay. Sus ideas influirían en algunos redactores importantes de la Constitución argentina de 1853.
