Shortly before his death, Beuys created his sculpture "The End of the 20th Century"-- four years before the fall of the Berlin wall. This existential interest in the future that survived all disappointments and aberrances of the 20th century forms the starting point for the new exhibition at the National Gallery, part of the State Museums of Berlin. Works from the Collection Marx and more recent positions are presented in ten chapters that take on the wording of Beuys's eponymous sculpture "The End of the 20th Century" in an associative way, while simultaneously widening the scope of the title and calling it into question. The catalogue is based on the principle of the collage developed by the Berlin graphic design office cyan in collaboration with the editors specifically for the art works shown in the book and the selected texts. The different texts and text formats -- from philosophy to poetry, reflecting the 20th century as a mental space -- enter into a dialogue with the images. The exhibition is on view from September 13 to March 31, 2014, at the Hamburger Bahnhof.

Geschult durch die Malerei der Moderne, das frühe sowjetische, italienische und französische Kino, das Theater und die Poesie, entwickelte Helga Paris als fotografische Autodidaktin über viereinhalb Jahrzehnte hinweg ein umfangreiches OEuvre in zärtlich-nuancenreichem Schwarzweiß. Der Band wird begleitet von Texten des Verlegers Gerhard Wolf und des Kurators und Kunsthistorikers Eugen Blume. Er war mit Christa Wolf verheiratet. --With an eye trained by modernist painting and early Soviet, Italian, and French cinema and influenced by theatre and poetry, self-taught photographer Helga Paris developed an extensive oeuvre of gently nuanced black-and-white images over a period of four and a half decades. The great trust and confidence that people had in her as an artist and as a person are a hallmark of all her portraits. Her subjects open themselves up to her and let her into their lives. The photographs show figures like Christa Wolf, Elke Erb, and Charlotte E. Pauly in private moments as well as the literary counter-public of Prenzlauer Berg and its protagonists. The book is accompanied by texts penned by publisher Gerhard Wolf and curator and art historian Eugen Blume. Paris's portraits of artists and writers in the GDR are being published for the first time in book form in conjunction with an exhibition at the Leonhardi Museum in Dresden.Helga Paris, born 1938, is one of the most important photographers in Germany. Eugen Blume, born 1951 in Bitterfeld, is a curator and art historian. From 2001 to 2016 he was director of Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart in Berlin. Gerhard Wolf, born 1928 in Bad Frankenhausen, is an editor, author, and publisher. At Aufbau he published young nonconformist writers. In 1991 he launched Janus Press. He was married to Christa Wolf.

In thirteen chapters, the exhibition and the accompanying catalogue offer profound insight into the cosmopolitan thinking of Joseph Beuys, as manifested in his actions, which are presented in the form of video projections and photographs. For it is in this capacity-as an acting, speaking, and moving figure-that Beuys examined the central, radical idea of his expanded concept of art: "Every human being is an artist." The goal of his universalist approach was to renew society from the ground up. To this day, his influence can be felt in artistic and political discourses. In this exhibition, contemporary artists and representatives from various areas of society enter into a multilayered, transcultural dialogue with Beuys. From today's perspective, they confirm, question, and expand upon his theses about the possibilities of a future conceived via art. His 100th birthday in 2021 is an occasion to rediscover, appreciate, and critically question his complex body of work and his international influence.
