" Le public littéraire de la Suisse française, de Lausanne en particulier, a quelques droits sur cet ouvrage. La première édition portait cette dédicace: A mes auditeurs de Lausanne. Pensé et formé sous leurs yeux, ce livre leur appartient. Sans la maintenir expressément, l'auteur la rappelle dans l'édition nouvelle, et il y ajoute dans les notes des éclaircissements précieux. Voyageant en Suisse dans l'été de 1837, il s'arrêta quelques jours à Lausanne, où il avait un ami, M. Juste Olivier, notre poëte. Dans le courant de la conversation, il exprima le regret de ne pouvoir trouver une année d'entier loisir pour mener à bonne fin ou mettre du moins en pleine voie d'exécution le projet qu'il nourrissait depuis longtemps d'une histoire de Port-Royal. Cette parole, jetée au hasard, ne tomba pas à terre. Peu de jours après, M. Olivier sondait M. Sainte-Beuve pour savoir s'il accepterait de faire à l'académie de Lausanne un cours d'une année sur Port-Royal. Il accepta, dit-il, avec gratitude, et deux mois après il venait s'installer à Lausanne avec toute sa bibliothèque janséniste..."
