Den unge, smukke Mary Lawson har fået plads som huslærerinde for familien de Morvilles datter Alphonsine. CHAPITRE PREMIER. LA DOUBLE CHASSE. Cette partie de la Sologne, où viennent se confiner, du nord au sud, les départements du Loiret et du Loir-et-Cher, et dont une portion forme ce qu'on appelle le bassin de la Sauldre, offre une physionomie particulière: ce sont généralement d'immenses bois de sapins coupés çà et là par de grandes plaines de bruyères, ou par des terrains tourbeux, que submergent presque toujours les débordements des rivières et des ruisseaux. Ce sont encore de vastes étangs encadrés de touffes d'iris et de joncs fleuris, eaux dormantes souvent effleurées par le vol circulaire des courlis, des arcanettes ou des martin-pêcheurs; çà et là quelques vallées, des prairies, semées de massifs de chênes, rompent l'aspect uniforme de ce paysage aux lignes planes et tranquilles. Rien ne saurait rendre le calme mélancolique de ce pays désert, aux vastes horizons formés par les masses toujours vertes des forêts de sapins; de ces solitudes profondes, où résonne, de temps à autre, le choc sonore de la cognée du bûcheron, et d'où s'élève, lorsque le vent souffle, un bruit sourd, prolongé, imposant, comme le lointain mugissement de la mer; bruit causé par l'agitation et le frôlement des branchages des arbres verts; ce n'est pas non plus un spectacle sans majesté que de voir le soleil s'abaisser lentement derrière ces plaines immenses, unies comme un lac, et couvertes de bruyères roses et d'ajoncs d'un jaune d'or que la brise du soir fait doucement onduler, ainsi qu'une nappe de verdure de fleurs. Les oiseaux de proie, qui choisissent pour repaire les grands bois déserts, les jean-le-blancs, les aigles de Sologne, les bondrées, les faucons, sont aussi nombreux dans ces solitudes que les oiseaux aquatiques. Ce qui donne, surtout l'hiver, à cette contrée un aspect singulier, c'est l'éternelle et sombre verdure de ses sapinières mêlées de taillis de bouleaux et de chênes, où gîtent toujours le renard, le chevreuil, le loup, et où s'aventurent souvent les cerfs et les sangliers des forêts voisines. Aussi ce pays est-il la terre promise du chasseur et conséquemment du braconnier, car le lièvre, la perdrix rouge, le faisan y abondent, et le lapin y pullule de telle sorte que, depuis le riche propriétaire dont il ronge les jeunes bois, jusqu'aux pauvres cultivateurs dont il broute les maigres guérets, tous le regardent comme un fléau destructeur.

Eugène Sue (1804 -1857) fue un escritor francés nacido en París. Autor de novelas por entregas publicadas en diversos periódicos de la época. Este autor fue en la década de 1840 uno de los autores más leídos y más influyentes de Francia. Ha entrado en la historia de la literatura como uno de los creadores de la novela por entregas, publicada en los diarios, y como autor de la novela quizá de mayor éxito publicada en un periódico: Los misterios de París. Estuvo fuertemente influenciado de la ideas socialistas, y en especial del socialismo utópico, que emergían en aquella época en el escenario político europeo, dejándolas plasmadas en su gran obra Los misterios de París y también en El judío errante; estos dos libros fueron dramatizados por el propio Sue.
