Son socialisme engagé grandit, et sous un plume critique, écrit de 1842 à 1843 « Les Mystères de Paris », suivi du « Juif errant ». Lors de l’accession au pouvoir par Napoléon III, Sue s’emporte violemment contre le coup d’État. Condamné à la prison, il s’exile. « Les Mystères du peuple » est publié mais doit déjouer la censure.
Aux abords de l'Océan Polaire qui joint la Sibérie à l’Amérique du Nord, les empreintes à sept clous formant une croix d'un marcheur invétéré (côté Europe), et celles d'une femme (côté Amérique), semblent dire que tous deux s'observent. Il s'agit du Juif errant et de la princesse juive Hérodiade : les figures protectrices de tous les personnages de la série légendaire du « Juif errant ».Au fil des seize parties, comme dans « Les Mystères de Paris », Eugène Sue peint la vie des travailleurs, des ouvriers, des hommes et des femmes des bas-fonds. Il introduit ainsi en littérature une foule de marginaux que le roman bourgeois avait jusqu'alors dédaignés, et exhorte, en un roman-feuilleton extrêmement populaire à sa sortie, les souffrances du peuple. Rodolphe, personnage mystérieux au début du roman, s'attelle à rétablir une forme de justice sociale dans le Paris du XIXe siècle. Il croise donc des travailleurs pauvres, aussi bien que des criminels, voulant récompenser les bons et punir les méchants. Les péripéties des héros leur font parcourir Paris et ses environs, décrivant ainsi des lieux types de population : la ferme, l'immeuble du Vieux Paris et les rues...
