La Coucaratcha est une mouche d'une espèce particulière à l'Espagne, non comme insecte, mais comme tradition populaire. La Coucaratcha fait les Espagnols causeurs, rieurs, conteurs, spirituellement bavards; les Espagnols sont bien heureux ! - Dans le livre de M. Sue, la Coucaratcha est une conteuse infatigable, qui entasse les personnages les plus vicieux, les plus démoralisés, selon la morale humaine. Pour apaiser le grain et sauver son capitaine, le coupable se précipite à l'eau; à peine est-il noyé, que le vent tombe et la mer se calme. - Les Aventures de Narcisse Gelin, ainsi que celles de Claude Belissan, sont prodigieusement plaisantes. Le premier, fils d'un bonnetier, s'embarque pour trouver la poésie; il est pendu. Le second, pour conquérir l'indépendance d'un homme, il est mangé par les anthropophages. - Le Cheval noir et le Chien blanc est l'histoire d'un mari jaloux comme on en voit tant. - Navarin est une description riche et fidèle de ce noble souvenir. - Crao est une nouvelle dont le dénoûment est fort dramatique. - Le Remords est une pochade qui semble tracée par une femme. - Le dernier de ces contes est l'Ami Wolf, qui, à la fin d'une orgie, conte à un Français un crime dont il s'est rendu coupable, et le lendemain le provoque à un combat à mort, tout en l'aimant, afin qu'un seul ait son secret, lui ou son adversaire. Wolf n'a chargé qu'un pistolet, il choisit l'autre, et se laisse tuer avec un sang-froid, une volonté, une volupté inexprimables.
