Ese modo furtivo de penetrar en el sagrado del hogar doméstico no cuadra bien con el propósito elevado y generoso que inspira todas las obras de este afamado novelista andrógino. No es propio de caballeros de noble alcurnia que saben mantener su decoro y conservar incontaminado el lustre de su casa, el mendigar relaciones buscando pretextos para introducirse en el trato y familiaridad de la gente de valía, y menos amoldarse a las mañas rastreras de la gente baladí para lograr por cansancio o por sorpresa lo que cara a cara se les niega. ¿Es por aristocrático orgullo y por desprecio de los hábitos generales por lo que el hombre bien nacido se desdeña de pordiosear de casa en casa, y más aún de introducirse clandestinamente en la morada ajena, como el malhechor que se propone robar o asesinar al dueño desapercibido? No por cierto: la decencia, la moral, la ley, se lo prohíben; sírvanse tenerlo presente los autores de buenos libros que sin dar importancia al antiguo recato literario, y acomodándose al uso tan generalizado de propagarse por mano de los repartidores, se dejan ir de puerta en puerta en compañía con la pestífera falange de publicaciones ilustradas y baratas, o silenciosamente se ingieren y deslizan con ellas dentro de las casas sin permiso de los padres de familia.

Al comenzar estas pobres líneas, miserable fachada que pego con vergüenza a dos tan graciosos monumentos, y al escribir de novelas, según creo, por primera vez, después de tanto como he escrito en este mundo, juzgo que mis lectores no llevarán a mal el que principie confesándome con ellos sobre esta materia, a fin de que conozcan desde luego mis aficiones, mis hábitos, casi iba a decir mis doctrinas, algo de lo que siento y lo que pienso acerca de una lectura tan generalizada en nuestro siglo y en nuestro país.

Siguiendo la curva que forman las viejas murallas de Sevilla, ciñéndola cual faja de piedra, al dejar a la derecha el río y las Delicias, se encuentra la puerta de San Fernando. Desde esa puerta se extiende en línea recta sobre la llanura, hasta la base del cerro llamado Buena-Vista, un camino que pasa sobre un puente de piedra el riachuelo Tagarete, y sube la cuesta bastante pendiente del cerro, en cuya cima se hallan las ruinas de una capilla. Al contemplar ese camino a vista de pájaro parece que es un brazo que extiende Sevilla hacia aquellas ruinas, levantándole en alto como para llamar la atención sobre ellas, porque esas ruinas, aunque pequeñas y sin vestigio de mérito artístico, son un recuerdo religioso e histórico, son una herencia del gran rey Femando III, cuya memoria es tan popular, que se le admira como héroe, que se le venera como Santo, que se le ama como Rey, realizando así esa gran figura histórica el ideal del pueblo español.
