வடமொழியில் மகாபாரதத்தில் உள்ள கிளைக்கதை பலவற்றுள் ஒன்றைப் பெருங்கதையிற் பிரித்து, தமிழிலும் ஆங்கிலத்திலும் சந்திரகாசன்கதை எழுதினார் சிலர். வடமொழிக் கிளைக்கதையை முதனூலெனின் இக்கதைகளை வழி நூலெனல் பொருந்தும். இப்பொழுது யான் எழுதுவது நாடகவடிவம் அமைந்துள்ளது. இதற்கேற்பக் கதையைத் திரித்தும் விரித்தும் எழுதியுள்ளேன். இந்நாடகத்தில்வரும் சம்பா ஷணைக்கெல்லாம் முதனூல் வழி நூல்களில் ஆதாரம் இல்லை. இவையெல்லாம் கதைக்குப் பொருந்துமாறு யானே எழுதியவை. இப்படி யான் செய்ய எனக்கு அதிகாரம் அளித்தவர் காளிதாச மகாகவியும் மதங்கசூளாமணியும். இதுகாறும் நான் தமிழில் எழுதிய நூல் இயற்றமிழ் நூல். இதுவே நாடகத் தமிழில் நான் பிரசுரஞ்செய்யும் முதல் நூல். இயற்றமிழ் நூவ் ஏலாதன நாடகத்தமிழ் நூலில் வரலாம்.

மகாபாரதம் வடமொழியிற் பதினெட்டுப் பருவமுடையது. தமிழிற் பெருந்தேவனார் கி. பி. தொள்வது நூற்றாண்டிற் பாரதவெண்பா இயற்றினார். அதிற் சிறிது பாகமே நம் கைக்கெட்டியது; எஞ்சியவெல்லாம் அழிந்தொழிந்தன. அதன்பின் கி.பி. பதினைவது நூற்றாண்டில் வில்லிபுத்தூரர் விருத்தப்பாவால் மகாபாரதம் வகுத்தனர். இவர், பதினெட்டுப் பருவத்தில் முதற்பத்தையே கொண்டார்; அவற் அள்ளுங் கிளைக்கதைகளை ஒழித்தார். இவரியற்றிய மகாபாரதம் சொற்சுவை பொருட்சுவை கொண்டது. வாசிக்க வாசிக்க மேலும் மேலும் இன்பந்தருவது; ஆயினும் பத்திய ரூபமுள்ள இந்நூல் தமிழ்ப்பயிற்சி குறைந்த பலருக்குப் பயன்படாததாயிற்று. அன்றியும், இவற்றுள் சிறுவர்சிறுமியர் கற்கலாகாத கதைகள் ஆங்காங்கு காணலாம். இவற்றையெல்லாம் நீக்கி, கதையைச்சுருக்கி எழுதியது இந்நூல்.

இராமன் கதை - பிரான்ஸிஸ் கிங்ஸ்பரி Raman Kathai by Francis Kingsbury first published in 1938. இராமாயணம் வால்மீகி என்னும் முனிவரால் சமசுக்கிருத மொழியில் இயற்றப்பட்ட மிகப் பழைய இதிகாசமாகும்.இது இந்து சமயத்தின் முக்கியமான நூல்களுள் ஒன்று.கம்பர் என்னும் புலவர் இதனைத் தமிழில் எழுதினார். இது கம்ப இராமாயணம் எனப்படுகின்றது. இராமாயணம் என்பது இராமனின் பயணம் என்னும் பொருள் குறிக்கிறது.
