Une mère possessive, riche et veuve, un fils déchiré entre son amour pour sa mère et sa passion pour une pauvre et irréprochable jeune ouvrière que sa mère déteste par jalousie, sont là les trois personnages de ce roman à la fois tragique et poignant.

Les élections nous renseignent mal là-dessus; nous verrons pourquoi. Mais, en tout cas, ils ne forment, dans le pays entier, qu'une minorité assez petite. A l'autre extrémité, c'est le groupe, encore plus restreint et d'ailleurs vaincu autant qu'on peut l'être, des catholiques militants et des monarchistes irréductibles. Entre ces deux camps inégaux, il y a le pays, simplement; huit ou dix millions d'hommes sans opinion politique ou de républicains modérés, paysans, bourgeois, ouvriers même (ceux des grands centres mis à part); une multitude qui sait quelquefois ce qu'elle pense, mais qui, jusqu'ici, n'a pas fait l'effort de vouloir...
