"Um den Anfang der gewaltigen Fortschritte, welche die Gynäkologie aufweisen kann zu erforschen, brauchen wir nicht weit in unserm Jahrhundert zurückzugehen, kaum ein Menschenalter liegt derselbe hinter uns. Wie noch vor 30 Jahren die Bedeutung unserer Wissenschaft geschätzt wurde, das hat Thomas Emmet in seiner Gedächtnisrede auf Marion Sims in treffender Weise durch die Äusserungen illustriert, mit welchen ein hervorragender New Yorker Arzt und Chirurg im Jahre 1853 den Vorschlag von Marion Sims bezüglich der Errichtung eines Frauenhospitals beurteilte. Der Dr. David M. Reese behauptete nämlich zu jener Zeit, es sei jedenfalls leicht, Silbernitrat in einem Spiegel auf Ulcerationen zu giessen, ein Eichenrindendecoct gegen Leukorrhöe zu verschreiben und beim Prolaps einen Ring einzulegen, aber für ein besonderes Frauenhospital würden sich kaum genug kranke Frauen finden.Welch ein gewaltiger Unterschied zwischen damals und jetzt! Nicht blos an jeder Universität ist inzwischen eine gynäkologische Klinik errichtet worden; auch jede grössere Stadt, fast jedes bedeutende Krankenhaus, selbst wenn dasselbe nicht klinischen Zwecken dient, hat eine gynäkologische Abteilung aufzuweisen, und über Mangel an Kranken brauchen dieselben nicht zu klagen."Dieses Lehrbuch der Frauenkrankheiten ist ein unveränderter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1890.
