Edward George Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873) war ein englischer Romanautor und Politiker des 19. Jahrhunderts. Bekannt ist Bulwer-Lytton hauptsächlich für seinen Roman Die letzten Tage von Pompeji. Darüber hinaus kennt man auch sein Spätwerk Das Geschlecht der Zukunft. Aus dem Buch: "In einem der grünen Wäldchen, die unserer Insel so eigenthümlich angehören (der Kontinent hat Forsten, England Gehölze!) wohnte vor nicht gar langer Zeit eine reizende kleine Elfin, genannt Silpelit. Sie stammte, glaub' ich, von einem jüngern Zweig des Hauses Mab; doch mag dies auch blos eine genealogische Mythe seyn, denn die Elfen scheinen sehr empfänglich für Ahnenstolz, und wirklich läßt sich nicht leugnen, daß sie sich den freisinnigern Ansichten, die heutigen Tags so sehr im Schwung sind, nur mit einigem Widerstreben bequemen..."
