The Spielberg Files. This is the story of the escape of Steven Spielberg's ancestors from Russia to America; along with two million Jewish emigrants. On April 10, 2003, over 100,000 files went up in flames in a monastery in the town of Kamenets Podolsk in western Ukraine. These were the entire records of the Jewish community living there since the 15th century. Among these Jewish files were the records of the ancestors of Hollywood director, Steven Spielberg. This book traces the extraordinary untold story of the escape of his grandfather, Shimuel, during the Russian pogroms of 1905, which were instigated by 'The Black Hundred, ' a anti -Semitic secret society loyal to Tsar Nicholas II.A rescue operation was organised on an enormous scale by Jewish bankers in London, along with many other Jewish organisations. Their leader was Baron de Hirsch, who donated over £300,000,000 to this operation. It was one of the largest humanitarian rescues in human history.A biblical exodus of hundreds of ships, every year from ports, in Germany to America, was the main escape route; that was organised by Jewish man Albert Ballin. With vast funds at their disposal, organisations such as; Alliance Israélite Universelle, the Jewish Temporary Shelter and the Jewish Colonization Association, rescued, transported and resettled over two million Jewish emigrants to America; that were part of the Hasidic, Ashkenazi and Sephardic community. Those who did not escape became victims of Nazi death squads in the Ukraine in 1941, or fled eastwards to China, America and Israel. Some of these Jewish refugees were the Spielberg family. However, the Spielbergs that remained in Podolsk, were murdered, on the orders of the S.S. leader, Friedrick Jeckeln. The full breadth, context and scale of this story is now told for the first time. This book is the result of many years of research in archives in England, Germany, Austria, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and the Ukraine. The author travelled to these countries to rediscover the Jewish communities, and the lost archipelagos of villages and shtetls; in order to locate the synagogues, mass graves and archives that are the remnants of this lost Jewish homeland, known as the Pale of Settlement. It was a journey into the past to reconstruct what remains of this lost history, before it vanishes into the midst of time. This book uncovers the extraordinary story of the heroism, faith, love and hope, of a people on the edge of extinction, and the will to survive against all odds; and of those who assisted them in their quest, to find a new homeland.

Elizabeth Ross (1752 - 1836), [1] also known by her second and third married names, Ashburn and Claypoole, was an American upholsterer who was credited by her relatives in 1870 with making the first American flag, accordingly known as the Betsy Ross flag. Though most historians dismiss the story. Ross family tradition holds that General George Washington, commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and two members of a congressional committee-Robert Morris and George Ross-visited Mrs. Ross in 1776. Mrs. Ross convinced George Washington to change the shape of the stars in a sketch of a flag he showed her from six-pointed to five-pointed by demonstrating that it was easier and speedier to cut the latter. However, there is no archival evidence or other recorded verbal tradition to substantiate this story of the first American flag. It appears that the story first surfaced in the writings of her grandson in the 1870s with no mention or documentation in earlier decades

Due to the Internet Revolution, human conversational data -- in written forms -- are accumulating at a phenomenal rate. At the same time, improvements in speech technology enable many spoken conversations to be transcribed. Individuals and organizations engage in email exchanges, face-to-face meetings, blogging, texting and other social media activities. The advances in natural language processing provide ample opportunities for these "informal documents" to be analyzed and mined, thus creating numerous new and valuable applications. This book presents a set of computational methods to extract information from conversational data, and to provide natural language summaries of the data. The book begins with an overview of basic concepts, such as the differences between extractive and abstractive summaries, and metrics for evaluating the effectiveness of summarization and various extraction tasks. It also describes some of the benchmark corpora used in the literature. The book introducesextraction and mining methods for performing subjectivity and sentiment detection, topic segmentation and modeling, and the extraction of conversational structure. It also describes frameworks for conducting dialogue act recognition, decision and action item detection, and extraction of thread structure. There is a specific focus on performing all these tasks on conversational data, such as meeting transcripts (which exemplify synchronous conversations) and emails (which exemplify asynchronous conversations). Very recent approaches to deal with blogs, discussion forums and microblogs (e.g., Twitter) are also discussed. The second half of this book focuses on natural language summarization of conversational data. It gives an overview of several extractive and abstractive summarizers developed for emails, meetings, blogs and forums. It also describes attempts for building multi-modal summarizers. Last but not least, the book concludes with thoughts on topics for further development. Table of Contents: Introduction / Background: Corpora and Evaluation Methods / Mining Text Conversations / Summarizing Text Conversations / Conclusions / Final Thoughts
