Who were the Bible Christians? What is their legacy for Cornish culture and identity? How did Cornish members of the denomination operate at a global level? These are just some of the questions to be explored in this innovative study of the fascinating story of the Bible Christians founded in 1815 by William Bryant, a charismatic preacher originally from Gunwen in rural mid-Cornwall. Remembering the Bible Christians brings together a collection of essays written by an interdisciplinary group of contributors and using a variety of sources including statistical analysis of the 1851 religious census, old newspaper reports, literature, oral history and photography. Remembering the Bible Christians is the second volume in the third series of Cornish Studies. This series seeks to develop the ongoing work of the Institute of Cornish Studies (ICS) in promoting a greater knowledge and understanding of both contemporary and historical Cornwall. It encourages a comparative and interdisciplinary approach which is open to new perspectives, democratic scholarship and community engagement. There is a particular emphasis on thematic volumes and the dissemination of the findings of conferences and projects associated with the ICS.

  • - The Political Correspondence of Sir Francis and Lady Acland, 1910-1929
    af Garry Tregidga
    289,50 kr.

This volume edits the correspondence of Sir Francis and Lady Acland of Killerton, Devon. It brings together a unique collection of written sources for politics in the early twentieth century, ranging from the administrative worldof high politics to constituency electioneering in Cornwall and Devon. The Aclands made a prominent contribution to Liberal party politics in this period and their correspondence covers topics such as the pre-war campaign for female suffrage, the key events of the First World War and the party divisions that followed the fall of Asquith. These letters therefore offer fresh insight into the changing fortunes of Liberalism in this period. They also challenge the assumption that the South West of Britain was a political backwater, covering the remarkable rise and fall of Labour in Cornwall and the tensions generated in rural Devon by Lloyd George's land campaign in the mid-1920s. Notions of family tradition, territorial politics and constituency representation were played out against the competing influences of Devon, Cornwall and Westminster.

  • - Political Decline, Dormancy and Rebirth
    af Garry Tregidga
    857,95 kr.

The decline of the Liberal party is one of the most controversial subjects in twentieth-century British politics, and this book makes a distinctive contribution to the debate by focusing on the South West, where Liberalism remained a powerful force after 1918.
