""The World We Live In"" is a philosophical exploration of modern thought and its implications for life. Written by George Stuart Fullerton, this book delves into topics such as metaphysics, ethics, and religion, examining how they have been influenced by scientific advancements and changing cultural attitudes. He also explores the role of philosophy in helping us to navigate the complexities of modern life, and offers insights into how we can find meaning and purpose in a rapidly changing world. Overall, ""The World We Live In"" is a thought-provoking and insightful work that will appeal to anyone interested in philosophy, science, and the human condition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. William James, American psychologist and philosopher, was mainly known by his works on The Principles of Psychology and the Pragmatism. --- Everyone is now acquainted with the Conscious-Automaton-theory... The theory maintains that in everything outward we are pure material machines. Feeling is a mere collateral product of our nervous processes, unable to react upon them any more than a shadow reacts on the steps of the traveller whom it accompanies. Inert, uninfluential, a simple passenger in the voyage of life, it is allowed to remain on board, but not to touch the helm or handle the rigging. The theory also maintains that we are in error to suppose that our thoughts awaken each other by inward congruity or rational necessity, that disappointed hopes cause sadness, premisses conclusions, etc... The feelings are merely juxtaposed in that order without mutual cohesion, because the nerve-processes to which they severally correspond awaken each other in that order. It may seem strange that this latter part of the theory should be held by writers, who have openly expressed their belief in Hume's doctrine of causality. That doctrine asserts that the causality we seem to find between the terms of a physical chain of events, is an illegitimate outward projection of the inward necessity by which we feel each thought to sprout out of its customary antecedent. Strip the string of necessity from between ideas themselves, and it becomes hard indeed for a Humian to say how the notion of causality ever was born at all. Are We Automata?

What constitutes the moral in human behavior, what marks out right or wrong conduct from conduct ethically indifferent, we have not yet considered. But no man is wholly without information in the field of morals, and we may here fall back upon such conceptions as men generally possess before they have evolved a science of morals. In the light of such conceptions a simple and comparatively undeveloped culture may compare very favorably with one much higher in the scale of civilization.

Some of the material in Chapters I, II, and V of this volume has already appeared in the Psychological Review; and Chapters XV, XVI, and XVII have been reprinted without very much change. They first appeared as articles in the same journal. In Chapter XXXIII I have made some use of two articles published in the Popular Science Monthly. The chapters on Space and Time are reprinted from the Philosophical Review with little change except that, in Chapter XI, some new matter has been added. To the editors of the journals mentioned, Professor Cattell, Professor Baldwin, and Professor Creighton, my thanks are due for their courtesy in permitting me to reprint as I have done. Thus, about one-fourth of the present volume has already seen the light. It is right that I should say that nothing that has already appeared has been taken up into the book as an afterthought. From the beginning the work has been a unit; it has been for a number of years on my hands, and the publication of the papers above mentioned was due largely to a curiosity to see how the doctrines advocated would impress others. It was, perhaps, hardly fair to present them deprived of their setting, and this injustice, if injustice it be, is remedied now.At the end of the book I have placed a note on the Physical World Order, by my former pupil. Professor Edgar A. Singer, Jr., of the University of Pennsylvania. It has seemed to me of especial interest, as coming from one trained in metaphysical analysis and familiar with the principles and methods of the sciences.

Is the mind in the body? What do words mean? What are we supposed to know about space? These and other questions are explored by esteemed author and academic George Stuart Fullerton. The American-born Fullerton (1859-1925) was a philosopher, teacher, and at one time a prisoner of war who hosted the first meeting of the American Psychological Association in 1892. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and later Yale Divinity School. In 1904, he headed the philosophy department at Columbia University. During World War I, Fullerton was an exchange professor in Vienna and was imprisoned throughout the war. He returned the to U.S. with his health permanently damaged and committed suicide at age 66.

As there cannot be said to be a beaten path in philosophy, and as "Introductions" to the subject differ widely from one another, it is proper that I should give an indication of the scope of the present volume. It undertakes: 1. To point out what the word "philosophy" is made to cover in our universities and colleges at the present day, and to show why it is given this meaning. 2. To explain the nature of reflective or philosophical thinking, and to show how it differs from common thought and from science. 3. To give a general view of the main problems with which philosophers have felt called upon to deal. 4. To give an account of some of the more important types of philosophical doctrine which have arisen out of the consideration of such problems. 5. To indicate the relation of philosophy to the so-called philosophical sciences, and to the other sciences. 6. To show, finally, that the study of philosophy is of value to us all, and to give some practical admonitions on spirit and method. Had these admonitions been impressed upon me at a time when I was in especial need of guidance, I feel that they would have spared me no little anxiety and confusion of mind. For this reason, I recommend them to the attention of the reader. Such is the scope of my book. It aims to tell what philosophy is. It is not its chief object to advocate a particular type of doctrine. At the same time, as it is impossible to treat of the problems of philosophy except from some point of view, it will be found that, in Chapters III to XI, a doctrine is presented. It is the same as that presented much more in detail, and with a greater wealth of reference, in my "System of Metaphysics," which was published a short time ago. In the Notes in the back of this volume, the reader will find references to those parts of the larger work which treat of the subjects more briefly discussed here. It will be helpful to the teacher to keep the larger work on hand, and to use more or less of the material there presented as his undergraduate classes discuss the chapters of this one. Other references are also given in the Notes, and it may be profitable to direct the attention of students to them.

Handbook of Ethical Theory is a classic philosophy ethics text by George Stuart Fullerton. We are all amply provided, with moral maxims, which we hold with more or less confidence, but an insight into their significance is not attained without reflection and some serious effort. Yet, surely, in a field in which there are so many differences of opinion, clearness of insight and breadth of view are eminently desirable. It is with a view to helping students of ethics in our universities and outside of them to a clearer comprehension of the significance of morals and the end of ethical endeavor, that this book has been written.
