This work provides 50,000 words of prosodically-transcribed text from a variety of sources. The introduction explains fully the transcription conventions, the structure of the corpus and its relationship to other computer corpora, and provides examples of different versions of texts.

This text presents a history of English from the perspective of sociolinguistics and discourse analysis, relating changes and at the same time providing a framework for corpus-based historical research. It covers social events in Britain and Europe, the colonies and the "aftermath of Empire".
