Horne Fisher, "The Man Who Knew Too Much", is the main protagonist of the first eight stories. In the final story, "The Vengeance of the Statue", Fisher notes: "The Prime Minister is my father's friend. The Foreign Minister married my sister. The Chancellor of the Exchequer is my first cousin." Because of these intimate relationships with the leading political figures in the land, Fisher knows too much about the private politics behind the public politics of the day. This knowledge is a burden to him in the eight stories, because he is able to uncover the injustices and corruptions of the murders in each story, but in most cases the real killer gets away with the killing because to bring him openly to justice would create a greater chaos: starting a war, reinciting Irish rebellions or removing public faith in the government.

Chesterton, was an English writer, lay theologian, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, literary and art critic, biographer, and Christian apologist. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox." Unterwegs überfällt plötzlich eine Räuberbande die Gruppe und zur allgemeinen Überraschung stellt sich Ezza als Anführer der Räuber heraus. An dem Dichter und dem Pater ist ihnen nichts gelegen, doch von dem Bankier und dessen Kindern versprechen Sie sich ein gutes Lösegeld. Zum Glück kommt die Polizei zu Hilfe und schlägt die Räuber in die Flucht. Nur Ezza bleibt, doch er wird nicht verhaftet. Pater Brown ist dem Spiel nämlich längst auf die Schliche gekommen ...

Diesmal muß Pater Brown die entzückende Laura vor zwei ebenso unangenehmen wie aufdringlichen Verehrern schützen – und zwar auf Bitten eines dritten Kavaliers: Liebeszeilen wechseln sich mit Drohbriefen ab. Der pfiffige Pater findet heraus, daß die Verfolgte die Tochter eines pensionierten Münzsammlers ist und noch zwei Brüder hat: Arthur, der die Münzsammlung seines Vaters bekam und Giles, der nach Australien gehen mußte, weil er sich mit dem alten Herrn überwarf. Doch was hat das alles mit dem Fremden zu tun? Wer ist er, der weiß, daß Christable ihrem Bruder eine römische Münze stahl und sie mit dem Wissen darum um ihre Erbschaft erpreßte. Pater Brown weiß Rat.

Nicht Glockengeläut, nein Baulärm ist es, der Pater Brown allmorgentlich aus dem Schlaf reißt. Sein Interesse an dem Neubau gegenüber seiner Wohnung wird allerdings erst geweckt, als nach wochenlangem Streit zwischen der Baugesellschaft und der Gewerkschaft der Bauherr Sir Hubert Sand verschwindet. Zwei völlig verschiedene Spuren führen den Kirchenmann zu einer wieder einmal völlig unerwarteten Lösung des Falls. Pater Brown in Höchstform!

James Musgrave bittet die Londoner Anwaltskanzlei von Pater Browns Freund Granby um ein Darlehen. Dieses will er nach dem Tod seines Vaters zurückzahlen. Granby besucht gemeinsam mit Pater Brown den alten Baron Musgrave, um sich zu versichern, daß James tatsächlich Alleinerbe seines Vermögens ist. Der Baron bestätigt dies, doch gleichzeitig erklärt er, er wolle seinen Sohn niemals wiedersehen, da dieser ein Verbrechen auf dem Gewissen habe. Diese widersprüchlichen Aussagen lassen Zweifel keimen in Pater Brown, ob hier alles mit rechten Dingen zugeht. Auch andere Indizien sprechen dafür, daß irgendetwas nicht stimmt. Seinem Instinkt vertrauend stößt er schließlich auf das Schlimmste aller Verbrechen.

Nachdem man ihn noch in dem Dorf, das nahe seiner Villa liegt, aus dem Metzgerladen hatte kommen sehen, ist der alte Sir Arthur Vaudrey spurlos verschwunden. Wo kann er hingegangen sein? Dieses Rätsel beschäftigt Pater Brown. Er macht sich auf die Suche und findet den Vermißten schließlich am Flußufer, tot mit durchschnittener Kehle. Doch dies wirft eine neue Frage auf: wer hatte Grund, den alten Vaudrey zu ermorden? Verdächtige gibt es genug.

Es ist eine stürmische Nacht, in der Pater Brown auf der alten schottischen Burg eintrifft, um die mysteriösen Umstände des Todes von Lord Glengyle zu untersuchen.
