Den forældreløse Dietegen bliver uretfærdigt beskyldt for at stjæle en armbrøst og hængt - en beskæftigelse, man holder meget af i Seldwylas naboby Ruechenstein. Men da liget bliver kørt bort, opdager Küngolt, en pige fra Seldwyla, at drengen stadig er i live i sin kiste, og da han efter loven ikke kan blevet hængt to gange, bliver han sat fri og taget i huset hos Küngolts fader. Küngolt ser ham som sin kommende mand og behandler ham som sin ejendom, men efterhånden som de vokser til, bliver det Dietegen mere og mere uudholdeligt, og de to glider fra hinanden. Da Küngolt så en skønne dag bliver anklaget og dømt for hekseri efter at have brugt en elskovsdrik på nabobyens ynglinge og derved medført den enes død, føler Dietegen sig dog forpligtet til at bistå hende under hendes fornedrelse.Fortællingen bygger på retsakter fra 1400-tallet.

Da stenbrudsejeren Amrain i Seldwyla går fallit, flygter han over hals og hoved fra sin gæld, og efterlader konen Regula alene med tre børn. Den geskæftige kone ansætter en værkfører og får snart stenbruddet op igen og kan betale enhver sit, samtidig med at hun opdrager de tre børn. Især den yngste, Fritz, er hendes yndling, og man får gennem episoder af dennes opvækst et indblik i fru Regulas særegne opdragelsesmetoder.

Pankraz er en sur, selvglad og rethaverisk knægt, og da hans søster en dag for at drille ham har spist hans mad, løber han hjemmefra. Der skal femten års udlændighed, en smuk, men tåbelig kvinde og en snedig berberløve til for at gøre Pankraz til et omgængeligt og tilfreds menneske.

De støtte mænd er en vennekreds af syv gamle frihedskæmpere, der beslutter at deltage i en stor skyttefest, der afholdes i anledning af dannelsen af den schweiziske forbundsstat i 1849 efter mange års splittelse og religionskampe. Das literarische Motiv des Hochstaplers, die Verdeckung des Seins durch den schönen Schein - dies dient Keller als Grundstoff seiner berühmten Erzählung, in der er das Umschlagen vom romantisch-haltlosen Schein zu einer lebensgerechteren Humanität vorführt.Gottfried Keller, geb. 1819 in Zürich, wuchs in bescheidenen Verhältnissen auf. Nachdem er wegen eines Streichs die Schule verlassen musste, lernte er das Zeichnen und begann zu schreiben. Im Jahr 1840 konnte er ein Studium an der Münchner Kunstakademie beginnen, welches er aber nicht abschloss. 1842 kam er zurück nach Zürich. Stipendien und die finanzielle Unterstützung der Mutter ermöglichten ihm Aufenthalte in Heidelberg und Berlin, wo einige seiner bedeutendsten Werke entstanden. 1855 kehrte er nach Zürich zurück und wurde hier im Jahr 1861 zum Stadtschreiber. Dieses Amt übte er aus bis 1876, danach beanspruchte sein literarisches Arbeiten seine ganze Zeit. Gottfried Keller starb im Jahr 1890 in seiner Heimatstadt Zürich.
