As Brock - aided by Detective Sergeant Dave Poole and Kate Ebdon, his Australian-born detective inspector - investigates, the case takes him from London to Paris, and there will be more than one death before the shocking case is solved.
March, 1918. The Great War is grinding slowly to its bloody finale. Divisional Detective Inspector Ernest Hardcastle, head of the Whitehall Division of the Metropolitan Police, is called to a body is recovered from the Thames. Mavis Parker, the victim's attractive widow, proves to be a good-time girl, and to complicate matters, all the suspects seem to be known to each other, including a South African who purports to be an actor. But it is when Special Branch intervene that things really get complicated . . .
Featuring the worldly wise DI Brock and his wry sidekick DS Poole. When a woman's body is found by the Thames river police, floating opposite the Houses of Parliament in London, it doesn't take DI Brock long to work out that she's been murdered. There are marks of a ligature around her neck, and signs that she engaged in sexual intercourse shortly before death. Further investigation reveals the woman was one of a stable of prostitutes run by a shadowy figure wanted in his native Australia. But the investigation presses other names upon Brock and Poole, and they must suffer several missed turns and pay the price for their assumptions before they get their man.
