Gregory Bateson was a philosopher, anthropologist, photographer, naturalist and poet, as well as the husband and collaborator of Margaret Mead. This anthology of his major work contains a foreword by his daughter Mary Katherine Bateson.

In 31 posthumously collected lectures and writings, anthropologist, systems thinker and cyberneticist Gregory Bateson (1904-1980) addresses questions of ecology, mind, consciousness, linguistics, evolution and communication. His masterly synthesis stresses the need to re-establish a "sacred unity" between the human mind and the biosphere.

"Naven" is the name of a peculiar ritual practiced by Iatmul, a head-hunting tribe of New Guinea. The ceremony is performed to congratulate members of the tribe upon the completion of notable accomplishments, among which homicide ranks highest.
