Gustav Meyrink (1868 --1932), war ein österreichischer Schriftsteller und Übersetzer. Der Golem ist der Titel eines Romans in zwanzig Kapiteln von Gustav Meyrink. Er erschien erstmals in den Jahren 1913 und 1914 als Fortsetzungsroman in der Zeitschrift Die Weißen Blätter; 1915 wurde er in Buchform veröffentlicht. Frühes 20. Jahrhundert: Der anonyme Erzähler der Geschichte, zu Besuch in Prag, hat vor dem Zu-Bett-Gehen in einem Buch über das Leben Buddha Gotamas gelesen. Er fällt in einen unruhigen Halbschlaf und gleitet in eine Traumwelt, in der er Ereignisse erneut durchlebt, die sich vor mehr als dreißig Jahren im Prager Judenviertel zugetragen haben. In diesem Zustand nimmt er die Identität des Gemmenschneiders und Restaurators Athanasius Pernath an, der um 1890/1891 im Prager Ghetto lebt und nach und nach Zugang zu seiner eigenen Vergangenheit, seinem Innern, erhält, an deren Ende die Begegnung mit sich selbst steht.
