Heinrich Rudolf Zille (1858-1929) war ein deutscher Grafiker, Maler und Fotograf. In seiner Kunst bevorzugte der "Pinselheinrich" genannte Zille Themen aus dem Berliner Volksleben, das er ebenso lokalpatriotisch wie sozialkritisch darstellte. Zille gehört zu den bekanntesten Berlinern der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und zählt neben Claire Waldoff, mit der er befreundet war, zu den Berliner Originalen. Um die Wende zum 20. Jahrhundert begann Heinrich Zille immer bewusster, Szenen aus der proletarischen Unterschicht für sich als Sujet zu entdecken. Zille fand sein "Milljöh" in den Hinterhöfen der Mietskasernen, Seitengassen und Kaschemmen der Arbeiterviertel. Hans Ostwald (1873-1940) war ein deutscher Journalist, Erzähler und Kulturhistoriker. Hans Ostwald blieb seiner Absicht, unsere Kultur von unten zu beleuchten, in allen seinen folgenden Werken verpflichtet. So wurde er zu einem der produktivsten Chronisten der unteren sozialen Klassen und gesellschaftlichen Randgruppen der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, sowie zu einem der wichtigsten populärwissenschaftlichen Kulturhistoriker Berlins.
