That quarter century has passed, and we are now able to open them for all to learn. "U-Boat War in Photos" volume 1 (U-1 through U-29) The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuously running battle in the history of war. The German U-Bootfahrer were some of the most honorable fighters in the war despite wartime propaganda to the contrary. They did not machine gun men in the water but rather, they helped struggling survivors of the sunken ships in the early years. After 'Black May' of 1943 when the German codes were broken and 'Huff-Duff' (or High Frequency Directional Finder = HFDF) came on the scene and U-Boats did not dare linger on the surface did the U-Boats cease giving aid; they never murdered men at sea. Nearly 3,000 ships were sunk, tens of thousand merchant sailors died, more than 800 U-Boats were lost and nearly 29,000 U-Bootfahrer perished in the cold oceans of the world. At the end of the war however, the U-Bootwaffe was the only oversubscribed branch of the Wehrmacht (German military forces). After 'Black May' U-Boats had one chance in ten of returning from their first Feindfahrt (war patrol) and nine out of ten chances of being sunk. Still they enlisted.....still they went to sea, most never to return.
Each chapter is a separate memory of a veteran of the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest continual battle in history. These veterans of the U-Boats remember how it was with comments from veterans of the Royal Navy and the US Navy. First person memories are the best history there is.
Aviation experiences direct from the memories of the men who fought in the skies during World War Two.

In books like this, we attempt to reveal the real truths behind the propaganda we have been taught over the decades. So much of the published history is incorrect or blatantly false, either by error or by design. In the volumes of this book, we rip away the curtain of false information and reveal true history, direct from those who were there. We promised our sources that we would keep these files and stories locked up for 25 years. That time has passed and we now open the books for all.
Private snapshots taken by German soldiers as the went through training then deployment into Norway. Photos of the family back in Germany; photos of the scenery as they moved forward, scenes of battle and scenes of funeral processions. These photos are all shot by foot soldiers in the war.
Germany was destroyed, devastated, broken and helpless under the victorious Allied powers after World War One. The ill-conceived Treaty of Versailles had a boot on the German throat. They were allowed a small defensive military not to exceed 100,000 troops and no more than 800 officers. Above all, Germany was not permitted any U-Boats of any kind. How was it then, that as early as 1936 when German U-Boats first went into combat, that they had the most advanced submarines at sea? Further, when World War Two began on 1 September 1939, they had even more units and more advanced submarines than any other navy? While it is true that the U-Bootwaffe had far too few U-Boats on 1 Sept. 1939, they had the most advanced submarines of the time. This book explains the secret planning of the new U-Bootwaffe, the mid-war changes anticipated and requested by Karl Dönitz and it gives his analysis in 1946 why the war went like it did.
Photo history of the First Greater Germany Military Gathering in Kassel 1939. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers, sailors and airmen came from all over the Reich for this first celebration.
At first glance, this book appears to be about the wrongful court martial and execution by firing squad of a young U-Boat Commander simply because he removed the picture of Adolf Hitler that hung in the wardroom of his newly commissioned U-Boat. He was turned in by the lowest form of humanity - the political denouncer. His trial, sentencing and execution were carried out so swiftly that there was no chance to save his life. This book is far more than this one event in World War Two. The author remembers his teen years, of making English friends that would play an important part of his life at the end of the war. He talks about war clouds gathering and how all saw the impending disaster. Then, while in the U-Bootwaffe, he discusses many of the Skippers as well as the Flotilla Chiefs and even Großadmiral Karl Dönitz and he goes into great depths with names well known in the history of the U-Bootwaffe. Some facts are shocking. Also shocking is the fact that during World War Two, some 22,000 German military men were executed by military courts! That number represents two full-strength infantry divisions. Another 20,000 were sentenced to death but rather than face a firing squad, they were sent to penal battalions on the Eastern Front or attached to mine and bomb disposal units. Only about 20% of them survived. In comparison, the British executed only 317 and those for serious crimes such as murder. The US only executed one man, Private Eddie Slovak, for desertion. This book is far more than the drumhead court and swift execution of one man. It is a deep look into the German military and indeed, into the German life of the Second World War as seen through the eyes of one who lived it.
This is the continuation of our series of the U-Boat War in Photos with many photos of the U-Boats, the Skippers, their victims, the hunters and every kind of photo we could find to the give the reader the most thorough, most comprehensive look into the history of the German U-Bootwaffe of the Kriegsmarine. As we have reported in our previous book (Volume I) of this series, as well as, our other books on the U-Bootwaffe (U-Boat! Volumes 1-10, so far) there is a tremendous tribute to the U-Bootfahrer to their honor and chivalry in battle. We have been incredibly fortunate over the three and a half decades since we founded Sharkhunters, that we have met and become close friends with so many of the Skippers, officers, and crewmen. It would be impossible to list them all, but I had a sleeping room in the house of Otto Kretschmer, visited so many times with Erich Topp, Reinhard Hardegen, Horst von Schroeter, Rolf Thomsen, and my best friend in Germany, Hans-Georg Hess. They freely and unselfishly gave us their memories and history of the U-Boat War and in turn, we gave our word to tell their history honestly and without false wartime propaganda.
Histories of the U-Boats types that were not manufactured in large numbers; including Skipper's names, conning tower emblems, photos and data not available anywhere else.
World War Two first person German U-Boat (submarine) veterans' memories of the Battle of the Atlantic.
