"Die Lokalanästhesie auf dem Gebiet der allgemeinen Chirurgie in der Ausdehnung anzuwenden, als es mit Nutzen für die Kranken möglich ist, war bisher nur derjenige in der Lage, der eine erhebliche Zahl einschlägiger Arbeiten studiert und durch Übung und Erfahrung die beschränkten Grenzen des Verfahrens kennen gelernt hatte.Es ist daher wohl an der Zeit, einmal unsere gegenwärtigen Kenntnisse der Lokalanästhesie zusammenzufassen. Ich habe, wie bekannt, seit Jahren für diesen Zweck vorgearbeitet. Die in einer Anzahl von Arbeiten veröffentlichten Ergebnisse meiner Untersuchungen über die wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen der Lokalanästhesie bilden, auf der einen Seite mannigfach ergänzt und erweitert, auf der anderen Seite des Unwesentlichen entledigt und verkürzt, einen Teil des Inhalts dieses Buches. Die Entwicklung der verschiedenen örtlichen Anästhesierungsmethoden habe ich mich möglichst objektiv zu schildern bestrebt. Die praktische Anwendung der Lokalanästhesie habe ich so darzustellen versucht, daß dem Leser das Studium vieler Einzelarbeiten und die Notwendigkeit längerer Erfahrung erspart bleibt. Das war nur möglich in Form einer auf die Lokalanästhesie zugeschnittenen Operationslehre und mit Hilfe zahlreicher Abbildungen."Dieses Buch über die Lokalanästhesie, ihre wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen und praktische Anwendung, ist ein unveränderter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1905. Illustriert mit über 120 historischen Abbildungen.
