Avant d'exposer le résultat de ces longues recherches, qu'il me soit permis d'adresser à M. Debray, dans le laboratoire duquel ces expériences ont été faites, l'assurance de mon affectueuse reconnaissance. Non seulement ce savant a bien voulu mettre à ma disposition des appareils rares et coûteux, mais, ce dont je ne saurais trop le remercier, il n'a cessé de m'encourager de ses bienveillants conseils, et son extrême bonté ne s'est jamais démentie un seul instant. Je dois ajouter d'ailleurs que j'ai trouvé à la Faculté des Sciences de Paris toutes les facilités possibles de travail. M. Troost et M. Friedel allaient au-devant de mes désirs, et, grâce à l'extrême obligeance de ces savants, j'ai pu mener à bien et avec rapidité toutes ces expériences sur l'isolement du fluor. Je suis parti dans ces recherches d'une idée préconçue. Si l'on suppose pour un instant que le chlore n'ait pas encore été isolé, bien que nous sachions préparer les chlorures métalliques, l'acide chlorhydrique, les chlorures de phosphore et d'autres corps similaires, il est de toute évidence que l'on augmentera les chances que l'on peut avoir d'isoler cet élément en s'adressant aux composés que le chlore peut former avec les métalloïdes...
