Selon Pirenne, l'événement qui provoqua la rupture de la tradition antique fut l'avance rapide et imprévue de l'islam. L'invasion musulmane renversa l'Empire perse 637-644, enleva à l'Empire byzantin, à la fin du VIIe siècle, la Syrie, l'Égypte, le Maghreb oriental, puis, au début du VIIIe siècle, l'Espagne, la Corse, la Sardaigne, une partie de l'Italie. Ce cataclysme cosmique eut pour conséquence de séparer définitivement l'Orient de l'Occident en mettant fin à l'unité méditerranéenne. La Méditerranée occidentale, devenue un lac musulman, cesse d'être la voie des échanges et des idées qu'elle n'avait cessé d'être jusqu'alors. Les échanges ayant pratiquement cessé, l'Occident fut alors forcé de vivre sur lui-même, en vase clos . L'axe de la civilisation fut repoussé du sud vers le nord. L'État franc devint alors l'arbitre de ses destinées . Un monde nouveau naissait, fondé sur une économie purement terrienne. Une dynastie s'imposait: les Carolingiens, appuyés par l'Église. Le Moyen Age commençait. Et Pirenne de conclure son article de 1922 par cet aphorisme célèbre repris avec moins d'élan dans l'ouvrage: Sans l'islam, l'Empire franc n'aurait sans doute jamais existé, et Charlemagne sans Mahomet serait inconcevable.

" Tout commerce quelque peu développé suppose nécessairement, chez ceux qui s'y adonnent, un certain degré d'instruction: on ne le conçoit pas sans la pratique tout au moins de la correspondance et du calcul. Il arrive évidemment que la passion du gain servie par le génie des affaires suffise, grâce à la faveur des circonstances, à pousser çà et là un illettré à la fortune. Chacun en pourrait citer des exemples. Mais ces exemples ne prouveraient rien. Dans une époque de développement économique avancé, l'ignorance du parvenu n'est que très relative. Il supplée, par les collaborateurs qu'il emploie et qu'il dirige, aux connaissances qui lui font défaut. On peut affirmer que l'instruction des marchands à une époque donnée est déterminée par l'activité économique de cette époque. Elle en est même un indice certain. Il est facile de constater qu'elle évolue au gré du mouvement commercial. Si jamais elle n'a été aussi perfectionnée que de nos jours, c'est que, jamais non plus, le transit et le trafic n'ont atteint l'ampleur où ils sont arrivés aujourd'hui. Et ce qui est vrai de notre temps l'a toujours été. Nous savons que les négociants de l'Égypte et de la Babylonie furent des gens instruits, et que notre système d'écriture est une invention de ce peuple essentiellement commerçant que furent les Phéniciens. Jusqu'à la fin de l'antiquité, la vie économique du monde méditerranéen n'a guère entretenu moins de scribes et de commis que de matelots. C'est seulement lorsque le commerce tombe dans la décadence qui caractérise les premiers siècles du moyen âge, qu'il cesse de requérir l'adjuvant, jusqu'alors indispensable, de la plume..."

" Parmi les questions que soulève en si grand nombre l'histoire constitutionnelle du moyen âge, il en est peu qui soient étudiées aujourd'hui avec autant de soin que celle de l'origine des villes. Ce problème n'attire pas seulement par sa difficulté les raisons de l'importance qu'on lui attribue sont plus sérieuses. À mesure, en effet, que l'on connaît mieux le moyen âge, on voit de plus en plus clairement combien a été puissante l'action exercée à cette époque par les bourgeoisies sur l'organisation sociale. C'est trop peu de dire que les villes ont produit le tiers État. Elles ont fait beaucoup plus. Leur influence n'a pas été purement politique: elle apparaît comme civilisatrice au plus haut point. Grâce à elle, non seulement l'État, mais encore les idées et les moeurs, l'art et la littérature, le commerce et l'industrie, se sont transformés. Le jour où naissent les villes, commence la décadence irrémédiable du moyen âge féodal et mystique. Des tendances nouvelles, plus humaines, plus terrestres, plus modernes, se manifestent dans l'Europe occidentale. Aux croisades, succède le commerce paisible des chrétiens et des musulmans dans les ports de la Méditerranée; aux chansons de gestes, les fableaux; au latin, les langues vulgaires. Et l'on a pu voir avec raison, dans l'esprit nouveau qui anime les bourgeoisies, une des causes les plus actives du succès de la Renaissance..."
