Holger Drachmann kritiserede på sin side i stigende grad det moderne gennembruds radikalisme, hvilket førte til et brud med Brandes-kredsen og en flirt med mere konservative kredse. I individualismens navn og muligvis på baggrund af den ofte rodløse livsstil kom det senere til et opgør med det borgerskab, der havde forskrevet sig til materialismen og samfundets vedtagne normer.Drachmann udviklede i sit forfatterskab en moderne, impressionistisk prosastil i en levende skildring af storbyens liv, og i forbindelse med hans 60-års fødselsdag blev store dele af det meget læste forfatterskab udgivet i samlingen Samlede poetiske Skrifter.
