Bogens antiheltinde Harriet Manners, 15 år, er en nørd og gør en dyd ud af det. Hun er ikke specielt populær, men prøver heller ikke at blive det. Hun er tilfreds med at have en bedste veninde, Nat, og en mednørd/stalker, Toby. Dog kunne hun godt tænke sig, at omgivelserne ikke gjorde nar ad hende og ad det at være en nørd. Nat, der altid har drømt om at blive model, tvinger Harriet med til en stor modemesse, hvor hun – Harriet, ikke Nat – bliver spottet af et modelbureau. Hun er ikke det fjerneste interesseret i tøj, sko og makeup, og hun er faktisk også lidt af en social analfabet. Men allermest er hun bange for at såre Nat. Derfor afviser hun til at starte med enhver tanke om en modelkarriere. Men så går det op for hende, at det måske kan blive et middel til at få omgivelserne til at acceptere hende og hendes nørdede sider.
