Novela del escritor francés Honoré de Balzac escrita en 1834 para la Revue de Paris y publicada en 1835 en forma de libro. Considerada una de las obras más importantes del autor, forma parte de las Escenas de la vida privada de la Comedia humana. En ella se analiza la naturaleza de la familia, el matrimonio, la estratificación y la corrupción en la sociedad parisina durante la Restauración francesa a partir del drama vivido por personajes como papá Goriot -el hombre que vive en la miseria y rechazado por sus hijas luego de haber sacrificado todo por ellas-, Eugène Rastignac -el joven cándido y ambicioso que aspira a formar parte de la alta sociedad-, los otros pensionistas en la Casa Vauquer y damas de la alta sociedad como la señora de Bauseánt o las hijas de Goriot.

Cette nouvelle est une des plus intéressantes Études de femmes. On y retrouve des figures importantes du monde balzacien, notamment les éternels dandys: Eugène de Rastignac, Maxime de Trailles, la marquise d'Espard. Mais ce monde-là joue un jeu beaucoup plus subtil que celui des salons aux intrigues mesquines. Il s'agit d'un jeu de séduction particulièrement raffiné. À travers les amours de la princesse se découvre aussi, sous un jour nouveau, le très sérieux Daniel d'Arthez, sage conseiller du Cénacle qui entourait Lucien de Rubempré dans Illusions perdues et qui le poussait à travailler pour devenir un véritable écrivain. Ici, le misérable d'Arthez qui vivait dans une chambre de bonne est devenu un écrivain estimable. S'il n'a pas encore atteint la gloire, il est déjà reconnu, fréquente le meilleur monde, et il a une position politique.

Évoquant principalement le château de Saché et ses alentours, en Indre-et-Loire, dont Balzac s'inspire fortement, ce roman, écrit en partie à Issoudun et à Vienne (Autriche), a été publié pour les deux premières parties (Les Deux Enfances et Les Premières Amours) de novembre à décembre 1835 dans la Revue de Paris. Puis, en raison d'un différend avec l'éditeur François Buloz, la publication fut interrompue. Le livre, dans sa version complète, paraît en 1836 chez Werdet.

Lisbeth Fischer, surnommée la cousine Bette, est en collaboration avec Valérie Marneffe, une femme qui s'est mariée sans être amoureuse, pour séduire et tourmenter une série d'hommes. L'un d'eux est Hector Hulot, mari de Adeline Hulot, la cousine de Lisbeth. Il sacrifie presque toute la fortune de sa famille dans le but de plaire à Valérie, qui finalement le quitte pour un commerçant nommé Célestin Crevel. Le juge Jean-Jules Popinot, qui réapparaît dans Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes et dont c'est ici la première apparition, donne l'exemple d'un magistrat intègre. Juge d'instruction au tribunal de première instance de la Seine, il lui faut comprendre la démarche de la marquise d'Espard, qui demande au tribunal la mise sous tutelle de son mari. Elle accuse le marquis, dont elle vit séparée depuis longtemps, de l'empêcher de voir ses deux enfants, et de gaspiller sa fortune au profit d'une famille modeste, la famille Jeanrenaud. On apprendra au fil de l'enquête que l'ancêtre des Jeanrenaud, un protestant, avait été pendu et ses biens confisqués par l'arrière-grand-père du marquis d'Espard qui cherche à réparer cette faute. La marquise prétend que son mari est fou, mais le juge Popinot perçoit, dans cette femme apparemment éplorée, une calculatrice sans scrupule et prête à tout. On la verra d'ailleurs à l'oeuvre dans Illusions perdues et Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes. Sa démarche juridique devenue célèbre dans le tout-Paris lui donne un prestige dont elle use et abuse. Après avoir soigneusement enquêté, Popinot s'apprête à faire un rapport qui n'est pas favorable à la plaignante lorsque la marquise le fait dessaisir du dossier qui est repris par le juge Camusot.
