For at udfylde tomrummet indleder David Lurie et forhold til en af sine studerende. Efter en anklage for sexchikane bliver han tvunget til at tage sin afsked og flytter ud til sin datter Lucy på hendes ensomt beliggende gård. Opholdet udvikler sig til et mareridt, da et brutalt overfald vender op og ned på alle hans forestillinger og truer med at ødelægge hans datter.
