Uncle Silas is told from the account of Maud Ruthyn, an heiress living with her reclusive father, Austin Ruthyn. She learns about her uncle, Silas Ruthyn, and his past reputation marred by gambling and the apparent suicide of a man to which Silas owed a large gambling debt that occurred in a locked room in Silas¿ residence. In order to clear the Ruthyn name of the rumors of Silas¿ past, Austin names Silas as Maud¿s guardian through Austin¿s will upon his death. Also noted in Austin¿s will, Silas would inherit the fortune left to Maud should she die while under his ward. Maud befriends her cousin Millicent and quickly adjusts to life under Silas¿ care, despite his often frightening demeanor. Although Silas has proclaimed that he¿s a newly reformed Christian, Maud becomes increasingly suspicious of her uncle¿s motives as life for her becomes increasingly unpleasant. The story of Maud Ruthyn and her uncle Silas evolved through multiple iterations, beginning with the short story ¿A Passage in the Secret History of an Irish Countess¿ in 1839, before ultimately becoming the three-volume novel published in 1864. This ebook reproduces a revised, two-volume version released a year later.

In a Glass Darkly is a collection of five short stories, presented as posthumous papers of cases of the ¿metaphysical¿ doctor Dr. Martin Hesselius. First appearing in ¿Green Tea,¿ originally published in 1869, Dr. Hesselius became one of the first literary occult detectives.J. Sheridan Le Fanu often made revisions to his work and re-released several under new names, including two from In a Glass Darkly: ¿The Familiar,¿ a revised version of ¿The Watcher,¿ published in 1851, and ¿Mr. Justice Harbottle,¿ a revised version of ¿An Account of Some Strange Disturbances in Aungier Street,¿ published in 1853.Most notably, this collection includes what is likely Sheridan Le Fanüs most famous work, ¿Carmilla.¿ A young countess turned vampire, Countess Mircalla uses the anagram of her name, Carmilla, to disguise herself in order to prey on unsuspecting young women. ¿Carmillä would heavily influence Bram Stoker¿s Dracula, which would later become the prototypical vampire archetype.

Our mission is to provide the world with beautiful, accessible, illuminating editions of classic horror fiction, introducing these chilling gems to new generations, making them gorgeously illustrated and giving you critical, historical, and artistic insights with every single story. This is one of those books. Ghostly coaches shuttling the mildewed cadavers of its ill-fated occupants; a young orphan being lured to a frosty death by a pale, little girl with a mangled shoulder; a man spends the night in a room with a fatal past; a restless ne'er-do-well recognizes his fiancee with her throat cut in a twilit vision; a beautiful woman is sold by her uncle to a corpse living beneath a church... These are the images that haunted their authors' brains and found their way into the Golden Age of the British ghost story... As industrial Britain steamed away from its feudal-agrarian past, a sense of self-deceit and insecurity - a lingering of violent potential and national shame - pervaded the collective unconscious of the world's preeminent empire. This psychological malaise manifested itself in the English ghost story, which saw its golden era in the Victorian Age. The unsettling works of Dickens, Gaskell, Blackwood, Hardy, Nesbit, Conan Doyle, M. R. James, Braddon, Broughton, Oliphant, Wells, and Le Fanu grace this brief homage to that unique literary era of elegance, mystique, and horror.

Wylder's Hand is a novel from Gothic and mystery writer Sheridan Le Fanu. "e;There was a little fair-haired child playing on the ground before the steps as I whirled by. The old rector had long passed away; the shorts, gaiters, and smile -- a phantom; and nature, who had gathered in the past, was providing for the future. The pretty mill-road, running up through Redman's Dell, dank and dark with tall romantic trees, was left behind in another moment; and we were now traversing the homely and antique street of the little town, with its queer shops and solid steep-roofed residences. Up Church-street I contrived a peep at the old gray tower where the chimes hung; and as we turned the corner a glance at the "e;Brandon Arms."e; How very small and low that palatial hostelry of my earlier recollections had grown! There were new faces at the door. It was only two-and-twenty years ago, and I was then but eleven years old.
