Every High School has their social outcasts. The band nerds, the math geeks, the chess club, the girl that chews her hair, but at Butler High, even the creepy nose picker in the chess club is more popular than Caleo Anima. No matter what he did, his pale skin, snow white hair, and piercing blue eyes always made him an easy target. He used to think that the only way things could get worse would be if someone found out that he was gay, but that isn't even the tip of the iceberg of problems after a mysterious stranger shows up and changes Caleo's life forever. Hidden amongst our society, a secret and magical race of people known as 'Leeches', have been engaging in civil war for decades. Both sides are desperately searching for a weapon with unlimited power that will give them the advantage they need to rule their world. This wouldn't mean anything to Caleo, except for one problem...He is that weapon! Forget making it through High School. Caleo has bigger problems! As the search for him goes on, the world is quickly crumbling around him. He's now fighting for his life and the life of what little family he has left. With the help of new friends, he has little time to try and master his newly found powers as he tries to figure out who he can trust, who is trying to use him, and who just wants him dead. One wrong step and being the awkward pale outcast will be the LEAST of his worries.
Every high school has it's social elite; the football players and cheerleaders ... you know, the popular crowd. At Butler High, Jack Barely was as close to the top as they came. Captain of the swim team, great hair, and abs that most would die for. However, that was all before the Leeches attacked, taking away everything: his popularity, his house, his grandmother, and even his best friend, Caleo, whom he secretly loved. Now, living in a destroyed world, popularity means nothing as Jack struggles just to keep him and his twin sister, Jillian, alive. With attacks happening more frequently, Jack starts to wonder why they are even bothering to try and hold onto the past when it just reminds him of all they have lost. Just when he has given up hope, Jack hears a rumor that Caleo is still alive and sets out on a mission to find him. But will Jack make it to finally tell Caleo how he really feels?

Every High school has its rock star. Maybe it's the quarterback, head cheerleader, or the valedictorian--the one student who outshines the rest. The one everyone knows will be successful in the years to come. For Nolan that was a lifetime ago, before he lost his sight, before he even knew what a Leech was. Now, all Nolan wants is to see Caleo survive to fulfill his destiny. A task that is becoming increasingly difficult as the government wades into the war, new enemies appear and the number of people trying to kill them skyrockets.

Prepare For The Next Disaster By Making Your Home Self-Sufficient Natural disasters certainly seem to be getting stronger and arriving more frequently. From the tornadoes in the south, hurricanes and flooding in the east to the wild fires in the west it seems every change of season brings on new disaster storms or devastating wild fires. If that isn't bad enough there also are plenty of man-made disasters leaving death and destruction in their wake. We all felt sympathy for the victims of the fertilizer plant explosion in Texas and the train derailment and ensuing explosion and fire in the small Canadian town. No one gets a "free pass" from the risk of disaster events. Just because it has not happened in your town or neighborhood does not mean it can't or it won't happen. The good news is that disaster preparedness can help tremendously to minimize the loss and human pain and suffering that is always present with such disasters. There are things you can do to prepare for times when you have to live "off grid" for an extended period of time without the comforts of home that you have so taken for granted. First of all, decide what type of disaster is likely to hit where you live. No matter where you live, one inconvenience that could turn into a disaster if it persists for an extended period of time is if your water supply goes down. Learn how much water to store and have available in an emergency like this. Another seemingly small problem that can turn into a disaster is a power outage in extreme weather. Learn what backup power options you have. One possible backup system would provide power to your home so seamlessly that you would barely even notice an extended power outage that lasts for weeks when your neighbors are stumbling around in the dark in the extreme heat or cold. Lastly, discover what provisions you should have stored in order to make your home self-sufficient during a disaster.

Scotland has often been depicted as a land of haunting, misty moors, and literary genius. But Scotland has also been a place of brutal crime, terrifying murder, child abuse, and bank robbery. Crime can strike anywhere. From the southern border to the Northern Isles, suspicion and suspense are never far away. Edinburgh, with its reputation for civility and elegance, has often been the scene of savagery; the dark streets of industrial Glasgow and Dundee have protected thieves and muggers, while the villages of coast and countryside hide murderous men and wild women. From murder in a Hebridean blackhouse and a macabre tale of revenge among the furious clamour of an eighteenth century mill, to a dark psychological thriller set within the tourist throng of Edinburgh Castle and an 'urbex' rivalry turning fatal in the concrete galleries of an abandoned modernist ruin, this collection uncovers the intimate--and deadly--connections between people and places.Prepare for a dangerous journey into the dark shadows of our nation's architecture--where passion, fury, desire, and death collide.

Experts view inbound marketing as a remarkable tool that can nurture prospects through the sales funnel and boost conversion rates 10-fold. They're right, but there's a catch. To the newcomer, inbound marketing is complex and involves a steep learning curve. There is much you need to know before you invest. Star Gates: Your Passage to Inbound Marketing is your all-in-one guide. It demonstrates how to master the preliminary disciplines essential to success, and provides side-by-side comparison of leading vendors including Pardot, HubSpot, Marketo and Oracle Eloqua by feature and price, helping you make an informed decision on the inbound marketing partner best suited to your needs. The book is "must reading" for C-level executives, marketing leaders, advertising and PR pros looking for a plain English explanation of how to put inbound marketing to work for their company. It is loaded with examples, charts and case studies that make it easy to learn this complex, but highly effective approach to driving new revenue and profits. Star Gates reveals the best deals to look for, and points a spotlight on scams to avoid -- hidden charges for database storage that can quickly exceed the cost of inbound marketing software itself; overpriced training courses; and some vendors' deceptive practice of advertising monthly charges when in reality they require a one-year contract and payment of the full annual amount up front. Most importantly, Star Gates is100% fact-based. Marketing/communications expert and former investigative journalist James Crawford is not affiliated with or compensated by any inbound marketing firm. This book provides the straight scoop on this growing industry, without bias or favoritism for any its participants.

An inviting, fascinating compendium of twenty-one of history's most famous lost places, from the Tower of Babel to the Twin TowersBuildings are more like us than we realize. They can be born into wealth or poverty, enjoying every privilege or struggling to make ends meet. They have parents-gods, kings and emperors, governments, visionaries and madmen-as well as friends and enemies. They have duties and responsibilities. They can endure crises of faith and purpose. They can succeed or fail. They can live. And, sooner or later, they die.In Fallen Glory, James Crawford uncovers the biographies of some of the world's most fascinating lost and ruined buildings, from the dawn of civilization to the cyber era. The lives of these iconic structures are packed with drama and intrigue. Soap operas on the grandest scale, they feature war and religion, politics and art, love and betrayal, catastrophe and hope. Frequently their afterlives have been no less dramatic-their memories used and abused down the millennia for purposes both sacred and profane. They provide the stage for a startling array of characters, including Gilgamesh, the Cretan Minotaur, Agamemnon, Nefertiti, Genghis Khan, Henry VIII, Catherine the Great, Adolf Hitler, and even Bruce Springsteen. The twenty-one structures Crawford focuses on include The Tower of Babel, The Temple of Jerusalem, The Library of Alexandria, The Bastille, Kowloon Walled City, the Berlin Wall, and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Ranging from the deserts of Iraq, the banks of the Nile and the cloud forests of Peru, to the great cities of Jerusalem, Istanbul, Paris, Rome, London and New York, Fallen Glory is a unique guide to a world of vanished architecture. And, by picking through the fragments of our past, it asks what history's scattered ruins can tell us about our own future.
Since the earliest known marker denoting the edge of one land and the beginning of the next-a stone column inscribed with Sumerian cuneiform-borders have been imagined, mapped, moved, and fought over. In The Edge of the Plain, James Crawford skillfully blends history, travel writing, and reportage to trace these borderlines throughout history and across the globe. What happens on the ground when we impose lines on a map that contradict how humans have always lived-and moved? Crawford confronts that question from bloody territorial disputes in Mesopotamia, to the Sápmi lands of Scandinavia, the shifting boundaries of the Israel-Palestine conflict, efforts to build a wall on the United States-Mexico border, and the dangerous border crossings pursued by migrants into Europe. And yet the role of borders extends beyond specific sites of conflict. On the largest scale, borders define the limits of empire-the two walls in Britain that once represented the northwestern edge of the Roman Empire; the mythological eastern gate supposedly closed off by Alexander the Great; China's virtual "Great Firewall." On the smallest, human scale, cell walls are the last physical barrier against disease, after lines of quarantine have failed. Finally, as The Edge of the Plain reveals, humans have not only made their mark on the landscape: the landscape itself is now changing, more and more rapidly due to climate change. Crawford introduces us to both the Alpine watershed-one such shifting, natural borderline-and the "Great Green Wall" in Africa, envisioned as an international, community-built bulwark against desertification.Borders are as old as human civilization, and focal points for today's colliding forces of nationalism, climate change, globalization, and mass migration. The Edge of the Plain illuminates these lines of separation past and present, how we define them-and how they define us.
