Moving from the slums of Tar Pit Terrace to the bungalows of Bay Tree Crescent, was a social wrench for both Edward Monkjack and his wife Janet. Here the roads were lined with trees rather than dead dogs. It had been the awkward and somewhat embarrassing demise of Edward's in-laws, that provided the means necessary for Janet to propel herself up the social ladder, bypassing a couple of rungs on the way. Edward reluctantly followed along, never quite letting go of his working class, rat catcher roots. The early 1950s saw the emergence of a new middle class. Bank managers, investment brokers and insurance agents made up this new social elite, and they dominated the Crescent. It was unlikely that common working-class people, such as the Monkjack's, would be invited in for cocktails, or indeed offered membership to the golf club. Edward however, knew that where there was brass, there was muck. If they wanted to make life difficult for him, which they did, he would go digging. They all had a secret.

One thing the farming village of Stonely didn't want, was illuminating - in any sense of the word. Having spent some 600 or so years in the dark recesses of anonymity, being thrust into the limelight and touched by the tentacles of technology would be as welcome as a wet fart in tight rubber underwear. The impending introduction of mains electricity, something which they had so far managed perfectly well without, would put the village firmly on the map, a fate it had until now successfully avoided. Modernity of the 1950s was on its doorstep and scraping cow dung off its boots. It also hid a couple of rather awkward secrets. Following on from 'An English Custom' we return to the village of Stonely in the early 1950s, home of the Duke, his bastard half brother and their equally illegitimate son Timothy. Dust had settled and thickened on the history books but someone had opened a new bottle of Quink and was already squeezing the bladder of their fountain pen. Robert 'Bob' Millwood would leave a bigger man but at a cost. Clifford as always turned a quick profit at the Inn whilst Shirley allowed her charms to lead their natural way forward. Herman was about to expose himself and he wouldn't be the first that week.

It never really occurred to the Home Office that a spy would live long enough to retire! April 1952, Richard Burns had spent his entire life looking over his shoulder, now he couldn't; the onset of osteoarthritis denied him that ability. Wasting away his last remaining years in a shabby bed-sitting room overlooking a funeral parlour's back yard, he decided enough was enough and bit down on his suicide pill. It turned out to be an aspirin. A chance meeting with Dr. Paul Stoneman, the ex-Secret Service Medical Officer, led him to the Twilight Home for Retired Gentlemen. Here he expected to die of boredom watching people disintegrate before him. He couldn't have been more wrong. The home operated on a shoe-string, the future here was measured in days, weeks at best. Richard's appearance rather ironically brought new life to his fellow guests.
