The Anglo-Saxon farmers had scarce conquered foot-hold, stronghold, freehold in the Western wilderness before they became sowers of hemp with remem-brance of Virginia, with remembrance of dear ancestral Britain. Away back in the days when they lived with wife, child, flock in frontier wooden fortresses and hardly ventured forth for water, salt, game, tillage in the very summer of that wild daylight ride of Tomlin-son and Bell, by comparison with which, my children, the midnight ride of Paul Revere, was as tame as the pitching of a rocking horse in a boy's nursery on that history making twelfth of August, of the year 1782, when these two backwoods riflemen, during that same Revolution the Kentuckians then fighting a branch of that same British army, rushed out of Bryan's Station for the rousing of the settlements and the saving of the West hemp was growing tall and thick near the walls of the fort.

When Sister Dolorosa had reached the summit of a low hill on her way to the convent, she turned and stood for a while looking backward. The landscape stretched away in a rude, unlovely expanse of grey fields, shaded in places by brown stubble, and in others lightened by pale, thin corn-the stunted reward of necessitous husbandry. This way and that ran wavering lines of low fences, some worm-eaten, others rotting beneath over-clambering wild-rose and blackberry.

As a young boy, he lived the life of the Southern ante-bellum gentry, but by the time he was a teenager the Civil War and Reconstruction had ushered in a new era for both himself and his family. Later, he moved to New York City to pursue writing full time. Many of his works reflect Kentucky themes. The book begins: Silently summer waxes. The first wave of warmth trembles northward, pauses, flees back, is gone; but it has left an imperishable touch on thousands of delicate things as a glacier scars the rocks. Another wave, more heated, more vitalizing, creeps forward; even while advancing, it has died away amid the common chill. Then follow the sunlit breakers, running faster and farther toward the changeless coast of the North, until over the entire gentle zone settles one deep, tranquil, crystalline, perfumed sea.
