Russian military deception, generally known as Maskirovka, is a centuries-old military concept that began to take on added importance at the start of the twentieth century. Now formally developed and practiced, the concept of Maskirovka encompasses a broad range of tactics, from the use of camouflage to the practice of denial and deception-all having applications in the military, intelligence, and political arenas. Maskirovka's arsenal of deceptive measures include concealment, manoeuvers intended to deceive, categorical denial, the use of decoys and dummies, and the spreading of propaganda and disinformation.

There are many important lessons for navigating the streets, but they cannot always be learned from black belt instructors. Often, the individuals most versed in these skills are the street toughs, hoodlums, roughnecks, and other assorted scoundrels who use them on a daily basis. This is not a traditional "self Defense" Book. The lessons described in this book were not written by martial arts instructors for martial artists. Instead, the lessons contained in this book are intended for the reader who has little or no background in fighting. They represent the "contributions" of memorable characters who populate the streets, and are presented in the hope of sharing with you some of the many unconventional but important lessons of self preservation that can be learned from the "Other Side."

Since the time of the "Second Ninja Boom" of the 1980s, the "ninja experts" have led novices to believe by that Taijutsu is Ninjutsu. Ranked instructors, who one assumes would know otherwise, have also perpetuated this erroneous notion among their student followers. Thus, the actual elements of Ninjutsu-intelligence-gathering, strategy, invisibility, among many others-are disregarded and omitted from contemporary training. The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a more authentic and balanced understanding of what traditional ninjutsu was-and of what it can still be. It will be of value to - readers without a dojo affiliation who are nonetheless interested in ninjutsu training - practitioners who may be disillusioned with the authenticity of training, and - active ninjutsu practitioners, regardless of dojo affiliation, seamlessly complementing their training and providing them with an ancillary curriculum to broaden their skills.

In the final chapter to The Art of War, Sun Tzu writes, "There are five classes of spies-Local spies; Internal spies; Turned spies; Expendable spies; and Surviving spies. When these five kinds of spy are all at work, none can discover their secret system. This system is called The Divine Threads, and it is the sovereign's most precious faculty." Sun Tzu chose this metaphor to convey how a variety of spies, who deceptively appear to be unrelated, are in fact connected to the same general or ruler in a manner not easily discernible to the unsuspecting enemy. Centuries later, this and other teachings of the Chinese Strategist would serve as the basis for Ninjutsu-the Way of the Ninja-and the deadliest art to have evolved in Feudal Japan.

When traveling without weapons that may be illegal, incriminating or disclose one's true identity and motivations, Intelligence operatives habitually carry non-weapons on their person-that is, defensive tools capable of thwarting or negating a life-threatening assault in a definitive manner. This volume of the Intelligence Tradecraft Series addresses how an Intelligence operative's attire can be used in combative engagement scenarios where no weapons are available-as is typically the case when one is in a foreign land. The skillful use of incidental weapons is not exclusive to spies, nor is it the only means of protection that available to them.
