SNOWBOUND! For three hours faces had peered out into the night. Many in the snowbound train had enjoyed the experience at first, enjoyed the thrill of unexpected adventure . . . and this, for a brief spell, had been adventure de luxe. There had been warmth and light, men's laughter, women's voices, and children's play. But the loudest jester among the men was now silent, huddled deep in his great coat; and the young woman who had clapped her hands in silly ecstasy when it was announced that the train was snowbound was weeping and shivering by turns . . .

""A Gentleman of Courage: A Novel of the Wilderness"" is a classic adventure novel by James Oliver Curwood. The story follows the adventures of Philip Whittemore, a wealthy young man who sets out to explore the Canadian wilderness. Along the way, he encounters danger, romance, and unexpected challenges that test his courage and resolve. From battling fierce animals to facing treacherous terrain, Philip must rely on his wits and his bravery to survive. But as he journeys deeper into the wilderness, he begins to question his own motivations and the true meaning of courage. With vivid descriptions of the natural world and a cast of memorable characters, ""A Gentleman of Courage"" is a thrilling and thought-provoking tale of adventure and self-discovery.1923. Most of Curwood¿¿¿¿¿¿¿s stories were adventure tales set in the Canadian North, where the author spent much of his time. During the 1920s his books were among the most popular in North America, and many were made into movies. The River¿¿¿¿¿¿¿s End was the first book to sell more than 100,000 copies in its first edition. The book begins: Pierre Gourdon had the love of God in his heart, a man¿¿¿¿¿¿¿s love for a man¿¿¿¿¿¿¿s God, and it seemed to him that in this golden sunset of a July afternoon the great Canadian wilderness all about him was whispering softly the truth of his faith and his creed. For Pierre was the son of a runner of the streams and forests, as that son¿¿¿¿¿¿¿s father had been before him, and love of adventure ran in his blood, and romance, too; so it was only in the wild and silent places that he felt the soul in him attuned to that fellowship with nature which the good teachers at Ste. Anne de Beaupre did not entirely approve. Billy's mind worked rapidly as he bent more determinedly to the pursuit. He knew that there were only two things that Bucky could do under the circumstances. Either he would follow after him with Walker and the driver or he would come alone. If Walker and Conway accompanied him the fight for Scottie Deane's capture would be a fair one, and the man who first put manacles about the outlaw's wrists would be the victor. But if he left his two companions in camp and came after him alone.

Cold winter lay deep in the Canadian wilderness. Over it the moon was rising, like a red pulsating ball, lighting up the vast white silence of the night in a shimmering glow. Not a sound broke the stillness of the desolation. It was too late for the life of day, too early for the nocturnal roamings and voices of the creatures of the night. Like the basin of a great amphitheater the frozen lake lay revealed in the light of the moon and a billion stars. Beyond it rose the spruce forest, black and forbidding. Along its nearer edges stood hushed walls of tamarack, bowed in the smothering clutch of snow and ice, shut in by impenetrable gloom.

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - It was late in the month of March, at the dying-out of the Eagle Moon, that Neewa the black bear cub got his first real look at the world. Noozak, his mother, was an old bear, and like an old person she was filled with rheumatics and the desire to sleep late. So instead of taking a short and ordinary nap of three months this particular winter of little Neewa's birth she slept four, which, made Neewa, who was born while ms mother was sound asleep, a little over two months old instead of six weeks when they came out of den. In choosing this den Noozak had gone to a cavern at the crest of a high, barren ridge, and from this point Neewa first looked down into the valley. For a time, coming out of darkness into sunlight, he was blinded. He could hear and smell and feel many things before he could see. And Noozak, as though puzzled at finding warmth and sunshine in place of cold and darkness, stood for many minutes sniffing the wind and looking down upon her domain.
