Elements of stardust lay buried in every human being, like literary themes lay buried beneath the body of a plot until they are brought to light by a phenomenal young woman.
The last decade had been great for Nick Caldwell Investigations, but for Nick Caldwell the person it had been constant pain and loss. Nick had one mantra: Evil can never win. Simple and to the point. In every case he has solved or tried to solve, this is what motivated him from the beginning. But evil is winning, and he doesn't know how to stop it. Nick Caldwell is losing his humanity, he has lost his family, he has lost his drive, and he has lost his faith. There isn't much left of Nick Caldwell. It is Christmas time, a time for redemption. Nick is mentioned in a lot of prayers strong enough to get the attention of those who answer prayers. This Christmas Nick Caldwell becomes A Christmas Project for his Guardian Angel and a cantankerous, reluctant and being last named on the Christmas Angel list. The assignment: Save Nick Caldwell from Nick Caldwell.
Nick Caldwell and his team take on a 40-year-old cold case murder of a young couple in front of the girl's home. In the process of solving the murder, Nick uncovers a series of murders spread over 40 years and several states.
Borne a month apart to families that lived next door to each other in the country, Grace and Ernie were inseparable until they reached their late teenage years when family events drove them apart just as they were falling in love. They're brought together again when Grace suffers an accident which causes her to lose her memory and has to return home because of amnesia. During her recovery, Grace is drawn to Ernie but can't remember details of their relationship. When they both retrace their troubled past, they discover what went wrong as they travel the bumpy road to discovering why their past was so filled with heartbreak.
When Sinclair Stewart calls his PI friend Nick Caldwell with a questionable lead on his daughter's murder thirty years earlier, Nick is doubtful but agrees to help. He moves his team from Chicago to New Orleans in an undercover operation to investigate the Barbeau Dance Studio where nineteen young women were students when they were murdered or disappeared. Pretending to study old buildings for paranormal activity, they set to work. But there are more questions than answers. Has it been too long? Will the Dance Studio staff help? Are the confidential informants they find dependable? Will the local police want outsiders coming in to do their work? Is this a case that is too cold even for Nick Caldwell? This book is a "must read" for fans of Nick Caldwell and murder mysteries.
Dead Crowe is a story of two families at war, the Crowe family and the Caldwell family. This war like all wars has multiple casualties and losses on both sides. Also, like all wars it doesn't make a lot of sense and it is based on the interpretations of history, ancient and current that are valid and imaginary. It is a reckless chess game. It is not a question of right or wrong but a question of who is more right and who is more wrong, and the answer, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholders. It is a battle of two magicians well acquainted with the art of misdirection and sleight of hand. Both sides believe they are on the side of the angels. The question is which avenging angel will win the day. It is the big city version of the Hatfields and the McCoys. There will be a "winner," but what have they really won.
