Cet exposé lui fit obtenir une déclaration favorable, qu'il fit voir à sa fille: mais ne tirant aucun fruit de son autorité ni de la permission du juge, il la viola. Mahomet Begheram, informé de son crime, lui fit trancher la tête, et permit que de ses biens on lui bâtît ce monument, qui rend témoignage du crime et de la punition.

Cependant quarante-deux bons soldats qui nous restaient encore sans blessures, reconnaissant que notre conservation dépendait de leur valeur, résolurent de combattre jusqu'au dernier soupir. Ses yeux sont fort petits pour sa taille, et ne lui servent à voir que devant lui; aussi la méthode la plus sûre pour l'éviter, lorsqu'on est à neuf ou à dix pas de lui, c'est de sauter un peu de côté. Quoique sa course soit fort légère, il est si lent à se tourner, qu'il lui en coûte beaucoup pour se mettre en état de voir son ennemi. Il mange peu d'herbe: il préfère les branches, les arbrisseaux, les chardons même, et surtout une sorte d'arbuste qui ressemble au genièvre.
