La partie la plus développée concerne la religion et D'Alembert met d'accent sur la tolérance religieuse des pasteurs qui a pris le pas sur le dogmatisme calviniste. Il juge même que le christianisme genevois est proche du déisme. En revanche, il déplore le maintien d'une rigueur morale qui interdit toute représentation théâtrale.
Jean-Baptiste le Rond D'Alembert, (1717-1783) war einer der bedeutendsten Mathematiker und Physiker des 18. Jahrhunderts und ein Philosoph der Aufklärung. Gemeinsam mit Diderot war der Aufklärer Herausgeber der Encyclopédie. D'Alembert wurde als außerehelicher Sohn des Generals Louis Camus Destouches (1668-1726) und der späteren Salonnière der Marquise de Tencin (1682-1749) geboren. Seine Mutter setzte ihn an der Kirche St-Jean-le-Rond de Paris aus. Seine Bekanntheit als Mathematiker verschaffte ihm Zugang zu den Pariser "Salons". Er war Stammgast bei Madame de Deffand und Julie de Lespinasse, mit der er von 1764 an zusammen lebte. D'Alembert war gemeinsam mit Denis Diderot Herausgeber der Encyclopédie, dem monumentalen Werk im Zeitalter der Aufklärung. Die Grundidee der Encyclopédie und ihrer Herausgeber war, das gesamte Wissen der Zeit zu sammeln und der Welt öffentlich zugängig zu machen. Für die Enzyklopädie arbeiteten neben Diderot und D'Alembert bekannte Persönlichkeiten wie Voltaire, Rousseau, Holbach und Montesquieu. Die Einleitung zur Enzyklopädie wurde von D'Alembert unter dem Titel "Ursprung und Entwicklung der Wissenschaften und der Künste" im Jahr 1751 verfasst.
