Le faites-nous du Saint-Évremond m'avait toujours intrigué. Je fus curieux d'avoir enfin le mot de cette littérature de gentilhomme si chère à Barbin, près de laquelle le XVIIIe siècle avait passé en l'honorant, comme par grâce, d'un regard distrait, et dont le nôtre ne s'occupait déjà plus..."

Il s'est battut pour rendre l'école grauite à tous. Il a fondé la « Ligue de l'enseignement » à cet effet et s'est engagé en politique afin de promouvoir ses idées. Ses qualités de pédagogue lui ont donné le don d'écrire des histoires pour rendre le savoir accessible aux enfants. Il a par exemple écrit : « Lettres à une petite fille sur nos organes et nos fonctions » ou encore le célèbre conte : « Le Grand Savant ».

Jean François Macé (22 August 1815 in Paris - 13 December 1894 in Monthiers) was a French educator, journalist, active freemaso and politician. He was perhaps best known as the founder of Ligue de l'enseignement to promote free, universal and secular education. From 1883 until his death, he was a senator for life in the Third Republic Senate.
