" Je me propose de resserrer dans un court espace l'histoire de la révolution française, afin que, mise à la portée de tous les lecteurs, et facilement répandue dans tous les pays, elle détruise les impressions qu'ont cherché à répandre contre la France les ennemis de la liberté. La postérité pourra seule être instruite des causes secrètes auxquelles il faut attribuer les évenemens particuliers qui ont rempli le cours de la révolution, et l'ont accélérée: mais les causes générales datent de plus loin. Elle avait été préparée par le cours des choses humaines; et la convocation inévitable des états-généraux ne fit, en quelque manière, que proclamer la révolution. Si quelque chose doit exciter l'étonnement des étrangers, c'est le bonheur avec lequel elle a été conduite au milieu du choc de tant d'intérêts opposés. Vingt fois le vaisseau de l'état a paru devoir être submergé par la tempête, et vingt fois il a échappé au naufrage, fort de sa masse et de la prudence de ses pilotes."
