The previous volume, A Shameful War, ended in 1646 with Royalists forces scattered far and wide. The town of Bovey Tracey and its inhabitants were left to continue their own battles with weather, crops, illness, and general upheaval. A Time of Confusion now takes the story on during the years 1648 and 1649, where life in the South Devon town of Bovey Tracey continues. There is little time for the ordinary folk to do other than pursue their livelihoods. A vicious bout of the 'Winter Fever' carries off more than normal; a king is brought to trial - some see it as a mockery - and is beheaded. A Commonwealth is firmly established, and Parliament reigns supreme. The inhabitants of this small town are left to struggle on as best they may. In the south-eastern lee of Dartmoor, the weather is always a factor!
Code Billy III is the third book of CODE BILLY meditations. The origin of this title comes from the time our daughter, age 26, was released from a rehab hospital after suffering a debilitating stroke. As we were preparing to take her home from the hospital, signing release forms and gathering up her personal belongings, an announcement came over the communication system saying "CODE BILLY, first floor." We ignored the announcement not knowing its meaning. As we came out of the elevator to the first floor and rounded the corner, all the doctors, nurses and techs who had treated our daughter were lined up on both sides of the hallway clapping as her wheelchair was pushed through the phalanx of well-wishers. Many were visibly crying along with patient and family.CODE BILLY is a protocol practiced by the hospital personnel when a long-term patient is finally released. Billy was a man no one thought would ever get out but he did and the so the ritual continues. --------- Jim Marshall has been in Christian ministry for over 50 years, serving as pastor, missionary, gospel singer and missions executive. He has pastored in Ohio, Indiana, Georgia, Oregon, Canada and Nairobi, Kenya. He has led churches from small to large. Jim is a graduate of Ohio Christian University and George Fox University Seminary. He and his musically gifted wife, Marg, have four children (the oldest now in heaven). His meditations are very relevant and to the point.
A spoiled, troublemaking city kid is ripped from his easy urban life at a college prep boarding school and forced to spend his summer working on a Montana ranch during the turbulent 1960s. He makes mistake after mistake with the valuable equipment, his fellow hired hands, and the stock-keeping Roy teetering on the edge of being fired. First love, Laura, the rancher's daughter, is a 16-year-old's dream come true. Instead of hitchhiking home Roy keeps trying - slowly coming to terms with what he was and what he wants to be. Roy finds acceptance and finally even respect from the rancher, his family, and the other hands. Out West is a coming of age story about how a boy learns to be a man during a self-awakening forced by hard work, responsibility, and the love of a good woman.
The end of 'organised' combat between the forces loyal to King Charles I and those loyal to Parliament. Charles, isolated in Oxford, is slowly losing all control as the New Model Army under Generals Fairfax and Cromwell deal the final hammer-blows to a disorganised and demoralised royal army. How all this affects (or is mostly disregarded by) the inhabitants of small Devon towns and villages, who have other things on their minds - how to ensure a sufficiency of food; how they may simply get on with their day-to-day lives; how to protect theirchildren. How some survivors of the various 'battles' manage to make a life forthemselves when the fighting stops. In other words - it is a story of 'ordinary' folk trying to live through a time of turbulence, religious turmoil, and general uncertainty. Bending official history slightly in the\process!
Life's lessons are all around us, we just need to slow down enough to observe and learn from them. Code Billy: 75 Real Life Meditations is a collection of lessons I've learned from real life situations. Whether it be shopping, driving my car or just sitting on the front porch "watching the world go by," I have witnessed real situations that have caused me to pause and think. In every instance the Bible has something helpful to say about what I've experienced. I hope these meditations speak to you as well.
