Joe R. Eagleman, Ph.D. tells in this autobiography about the many facets of his life. His early education was in a one-room rural grade school. His invention of an artificial tornado that extended from the ceiling of his laboratory at the University of Kansas resulted in local interest as well as international filming from a news crew from Japan. It later became the subject of a lawsuit between Universal Studios in Hollywood and the Volvo Company. After he was told by Universal Studios to "Name your price" he became involved in this successful lawsuit. A 50 foot version of his tornado was the main attraction in the Twister Building at Universal Studios Park in Orlando Florida from 1998 to 2015. Another copy of his tornado was created with his help by Ned Kahn at the Exploratorium in San Francisco where it continues to attract viewers and has for many decades. This autobiography tells of his early life on the farm as one of 12 children who was told by an older brother that he would never amount to anything. He tells of experiences in the one room rural grade school and of dealing with a bully on the playground. It includes his development as a scientist, artist, musician, luthier, marksman, taxidermist and other endeavors. His unique journey to becoming a Professor and Research Scientist is described. His career resulted in one who had experiments on Skylab and who influenced many thousands of students through his teaching and books and who made national changes to tornado safety guidelines. He initiated and developed the program in Atmospheric Science at KU that has now grown into a full department where Joe Eagleman Scholarships are given to worthy students.
A person's life is composed of many ordinary days with a few significant and monumental moments mixed in. This book is about the separate monumental moments that I have experienced. One of these was "flying" out a nine foot window when I was only eight years old. I attended a one room grade school and was disciplined by being made to chew tobacco. I am the 11th of 12 children and was told by an older brother that I would never amount to anything when I was preschool age and I promptly bit him on his arm. I wrecked a tractor at high speed in fourth gear on a gravel road when I was 10. I took a taxidermy course when I was in third grade. I was told by my Rifle Team coach in college that I should train for the Olympics. I invented a tornado that was copied by Universal Studios and the Exploratium. I had a research project on Skylab. I was knocked unconscious by electricity. I have written books, made guitars, mounted many different birds and animals, composed and recorded several musical albums and passed out at the top of the Spanish Steps.

An understanding of severe and unusual weather should be a fundamental part of everyone's storehouse of knowledge. We live in a world that is at least occasionally dominated by severe and unusual weather. Many types of severe weather are sufficiently rare that a common defense mechanism of many people is to assume that they will never be directly affected. However, there is hardly a place in the whole world that does not have some peculiar aspect of weather that requires some degree of understanding and preparedness in order to avoid loss of property and, perhaps, even life itself. Fortunately, no particular location has all the different kinds of unusual and severe weather; thus, coastal areas are exposed to the tremendous power of the hurricane that bring high winds and frequently produce flood conditions, while within the interior United States, where hurricanes are not a threat, such severe types of weather as tornadoes, hailstorms, and blizzards are sufficiently frequent that an understanding of these storms is essential when traveling or living in this part of the United States. Although lightning is a greater hazard in some parts of the world than others, there are very few locations, including Alaska and the Desert Southwest, where occasional severe thunderstorms do not develop numerous lightning strokes. A proper understanding is important for flash flooding, derechos, mountainadoes, haboobs and other unusual weather. People have different responses to everyday weather from resistant to feeling dominated by it. You can find your level of response from a self test that is provided.
