It also examines the circumstances through which visitors to a place, in part, produce that place through their performances.

Examines how people live in remote spaces of the Northern peripheries of Europe in a global world of connectivity, interdependency, mobility and non-linear dynamics. This book demonstrates how specific relationships between mobility and place are crucial in the making of societies.

The Nordic Atlantic area has seen remarkable examples of social formations in areas that many would perceive as too remote to allow the construction of functioning communities. But through innovations, networking and the formation of identities people have coped with distances, thus continuously rebuilding societies in Northern Norway, Iceland, the Faroes, and Greenland. Living conditions in the Nordic Atlantic are so extreme that one might ask whether the notion of society is applicable under these circumstances. The author argues that, yes, there is a meaningful way of comprehending these social formations, which is through the spatial and temporal practices that produce, reproduce, stabilize, destabilize and change them. He introduces the concept of coping, which means neither mastering nor adapting but relates to in-between strategies and tactics reflected in practices of securing people's way of life under conditions that are never totally under their control.

Praksis, rum og mobilitet præsenterer et aktuelt billede af dansk forskning inden for den sociale og kulturelle geografi og illustrerer dette forskningsområdes bidrag til både det socialvidenskabelige og det geografiske felt. Den socialteoretisk orienterede geografi har manifesteret sig internationalt i mange debatter inden for samfundsvidenskab og humaniora, ligesom den selv i stigende grad har åbnet sig for indflydelse fra andre fag. Det er denne tværvidenskabelige tendens, der kommer til udtryk i denne bog.  Fælles for bogens bidragsydere er en interesse for det sociale livs rumlige dimension. Det kommer til udtryk gennem diskussion af en række rumlige begreber som landskab, rum, strømme, territorier og steder. De sættes i spil over for problemer omkring social praksis, strategi og identitet og danner grundlag for opfattelser af socialt liv, der vægter forskellighed og kontekstualitet. I dette indgår også bestræbelser på at overskride den omdiskuterede dikotomi mellem konstruktivisme og realisme.
